More importantly, you're here because you want to make more money to support your family and leave a legacy for generations to come. I am honored you are here and I promise to make the most of our time together! Welcome!

Early Career: Learning the Ropes!

It's important for you to know a little about me and I how I learned so much about sales and digital marketing. My first job out of college (after graduating from Santa Clara University with a degree in Religious Studies) was with Valley Yellow Pages as an Account Executive. Within a year, I became one of the top 5 sales people in the strongest market, Sacramento, CA. During my time there, I met with thousands of business owners discussing the importance of advertising and marketing. Invariably, the biggest objection I got was, "I get all my business from word of mouth." At the time, in the first decade of 2000, the yellow page industry was beginning its decline. However, it was still a viable channel for marketing and advertising because we were just beginning to witness the start of the internet/Google revolution. As yellow pages began to die, the internet was exploding and business owners had to face the fact that the age-old response, "I get all my business from referrals" was dying as well. The days of relying on word of mouth advertising was over.

I left the yellow page industry and dabbled in other channels of advertising such as IMAX Theaters and radio, but determined that I would rather not sell advertising anymore and decided to shift gears and try the education sector. I took a job as the first Diversity Director at my alma mater, Jesuit High School. I was also the Assistant Admissions Director, so I was still utilizing my sales and marketing skills extensively with things such as marketing collateral design, public speaking, database management and advertising spends et al. This was a great opportunity to develop my skills on the branding and marketing side of the isle, providing me invaluable insight into the decision-making process of organizational leaders. Now I could see what it was like as the client making advertising and marketing decisions. While at Jesuit, I not only helped stabilize admissions applications but I also helped with the initial process of updating the schools brand. Even in the education industry, sales and marketing matter.

Career Checkpoint: Sharpening the Ax!

While working at Jesuit, my wife and I ran a small business called The Margarita Man of Sac-Town, Inc., a franchise of sorts. This was an awesome business and super fun, but was the wrong timing for us. We were raising 3 young children while trying to juggle the business with a full time job. So in 2011, we sold the business. Around that same time, I left Jesuit to pursue my career in sales and marketing again. At this point, I was looking for a career that would increase my income while at the same time provide some flexibility so that I could be fully engaged in my childrens' lives. A tall task to say the least. So from 2011 to 2013, I worked with several small businesses but couldn't find the right fit. Never underestimate the value of self awareness and life/work balance. Life is a marathon, not a sprint.

By March 2013, I landed at SolarCity. This was a major industry shift, but I instinctively applied my sales and marketing skills to a new field. Even though it took me a while to ramp up (about 3 months before I made my first sale) I experienced a sharp bell curve in my productivity once I was comfortable with the nuances of the solar industry. I experienced a tremendous amount of success at SolarCity, installing over a MegaWatt (1000 kW's) of solar power on approximately 150 homes throughout the US. I had finally found the right fit, or so I thought. I was eventually promoted to Regional Sales Manager, which was short-lived because it was at the end of SolarCity's legendary run, resulting in the messy Tesla acquisition (There is a huge back story here we can talk about another time). In October 2016, I left the company to pursue a new direction in my career, feeling let down by high hopes and false promises.

Lifelong Career: Sales & Marketing

At this point, if there was one thing I had learned is that EVERY business NEEDS and WANTS a good salesperson. If you can hold an intelligent conversation with an important decision maker and you are not afraid to ask for the business, you will ALWAYS find a job. And despite having to move around a bit, I have had a lot of success finding work because of my sales and marketing acumen.

Another thing I learned is that business owners are required to be sales and marketing experts by default. But based on my experience, most business owners do not have the bandwidth to even try to be sales and marketing experts. They are spread thin by the demands of running and business and still relying on "word of mouth" when they should be tapping into digital marketing.

Fast forward to August 2019, I have just recently left my position as a Development Manager for a nonprofit and it is this job that finally inspired me to join Wealthy Affiliate and pursue digital marketing more aggressively. Though I loved the mission of the organization, I realized that my personal and professional experience combined with the training and robust nature of the WA system could help thousands of businesses and nonprofits, not to mention the tens of thousands of families who rely on those businesses for their livelihood. I realized that digital marketing expertise is a huge need in today's economy and I am particularly gifted at it.

My Golden Circle

Which brings me to my "Why." Simon Sinek, author of two NY Times Bestsellers, talks about the importance of the "why" in his TED Talk, "How great leaders inspire action." His underlying point is that success is dependent on your ability to be clear and laser focused on your purpose, or golden circle. When you are in tune with your why, you are more likely to persevere when times get tough and you are more likely to articulate your value proposition more effectively (the how and the what).

My why is clear: to help business owners thrive because I believe they are the engine to our economy! When our small businesses thrive, our families thrive. According to the US Small Business Administration, small businesses make up 99.9% of US businesses and employs over 47% of the workforce! And with the explosion of the internet, there is no better opportunity for people of all backgrounds to create wealth through business building. The best part is that "over 4.33 billion people were active internet users as of July 2019, encompassing 56 percent of the global population," according to statista.com. I believe, as one of my favorite social media influencers Gary Vaynerchuk, that we are still grossly underestimating the power of the internet. So I want to help SBO's leverage the internet to grow their business so we can further strengthen the economy and open the doors to the next generation of entrepreneurs!

Welcome to Wealthy Affiliate Premium!

Glad that you joined us.

Wealthy Affiliate is an amazing environment to learn and apply our skills towards creating an online business. I tried to do this alone before and was completely lost.

Now I know why.

There are so many tricks of the trade and it saves so much time having it all laid out clearly in its training programs.

Keep following the training and exercises every day. Give it a year to see significant results. You'll be a happy camper by then. We all make progress at different rates and it is possible to see meaningful results in 4-6 months. Google cannot be rushed.

Google rewards people with websites that provide value to their visitors. It helps to boost their ad revenue of course! And that helps your websites get high rankings. But it takes time to build credibility. Once they realize your site is an authority site, good things will happen faster.

When you get stuck, and you will, just ask for help in the discussion area located below each lesson. Scroll down to find it. Another member who has the answer will get back to you promptly.

In the meantime have fun with the program. Much success to you.

Cheers!

Edwin
