Do I need to transfer my domain?

The easiest way to create a new domain and website is to simply complete the process in WA ... the site provides a very easy process of registering a new domain and automatically setting up the domain and website for you.

If you already have a domain however it gets a bit more complicated ... the following is intended to help you through the process, starting with the question which frequently causes confusion .... Do I need to transfer my domain?

The quick answer is NO

You can transfer an existing domain registration to WA, but there is little benefit. In fact moving the registration from your current Domain Registrar will incur additional cost ... it is best to wait until the renewal date.

Here are some points to consider ...

1. When you purchase a domain, you register and pay for the right to use that domain name, for a period of time. The term is normally one or two years in most cases, and often the fee is non-refundable.

2. The registrar records your personal details and attaches your name to a domain name to protect it for your exclusive use. To transfer it you must obtain an EPP code, from your existing registrar ... and ensure the domain is set to allow transfer. Most registrars have a period where transfer lock prevents a domain transfer for a period of time. If you just purchased a domain, it is unlikely you will be able to transfer it at this time, even if you wish to.

Example - GoDaddy statement of transfer lock period

3. The best time to transfer a domain is just prior to renewal date ... in this way you will not be paying twice for registration in the same time period.

4. Your website can still be created and hosted here at WA, without transferring your domain! To do this follow the instructions for your domain registrar and change the settings of the Name Server to the information shown below in .. .ns1.mywahosting.com and ns2.mywahosting.com . It takes time for the change to be active so be patient!

This tutorial takes you through the steps ...

5. Once the change is made and you have allowed for time for it to propogate to the internet, enter your domain name in the box and Add your domain to WA. If you see a box like the one below ... wait for a day and try again. or click on Follow these instructions to ensure you have followed the procedure completely.

6. If you wish to create a new domain or build your website you can click on the link in the Website --- Site Builder menu

I hope that helps ... I know this can be very confusing to new WebMasters!

Wishing everyone success ....

I have a travel blog in progress on blogspot through google that I’ve messed around with for a year or so. I purchased a dot.com domain name and configured my blogspot to point to it. Having zero experience with anything “website,” I felt quite accomplished that I was able to do that much. If you asked me who I purchased the domain through, or for how long, I would be hard pressed to come up with it. I do remember it was for around 12 bucks.

I pay nothing for the hosting on blogspot, but it would be nice to have the WA capabilities to continue modifying that site. I get very frustrated and step away when my formatting tanks.

Thank you for this post, as I will wait for the notification that my domain needs to be renewed, then attempt to figure it all out.

There are thousands of domain registration companies ... try this ... go to http://whois.domaintools.com/ and type in the domain url and it will tell you who the registrar is.

I already went through all of that, My problem is that WA and wordpress are not well in sink, I just need what I have in WA to correspond with what I have in WP. The update and the publish do not take place in my site. I feel like it is a waste of my time when I make correction in WA.

Hi Judith ... not sure what you mean ... WordPress is blogging platform that is installed on your account in WA ... this blog is also a WP blog but it is for WA business posts only. For content to appear on your own blog you must publish it there ... the tools in Site Content allow you to create a post and then publish it on your website. You must first setup the website by following the Getting Started tutorial.

Hi Allan, I do not know how to explain it anymore.
what ever correction and update I made through WA does not do anything in my site. Changes does not take place in my site.

This may be better addressed by support ... when you publish to your site it should show up as a post on the Blog Page .. maybe there is something in your setup not quite right! It works like a dream once setup. https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/websites/support

Great jewel Allan. It's good to know the many ways this can be done.

Thanks Phillip ... the terminology can be a challenge at times .. hope it helped a few people!

Hello Allan,

Thank you this is right on time. I am dealing with this issue now. I purchased a domain through clickfunnels before, I understood all of this. Amazing what two weeks of training how much more I understand. I really like the domain I choose because, it is my 1st and last name for branding but, the con is if I transfer it I will pay the additional fee because, it has only been a few months.

Hi Michelle ... yes, that is the issue ... no refunds on domain registrations ... you must make a decision, is it worth transferring or just leave the registration and use WA to host the site.

Thanks. I can even understand half of your comments. I'm In my second week I believe.

Hey Jeffrey ... it is a whole new vocabulary ... at 50% your doing well ... remember Google Search is your best friend!
