Just Write Don't Try To Be Right

It can be hard, in the beginning, to make that connection with ourselves, our thoughts, and our writing, let alone reaching out to an audience.

When we start, no one knows us, so we need to make a little song and dance. In the blogging world, that happens by publishing and managing content.

For many of us, the last writing ever done was back in college, many moons ago. In the beginning, it doesn't have to be award-winning. I see so many folks beating themselves up over their ability or perceived lack of. We all learn how to talk as baby's and writing is no different; we can learn. You can speak, you can write.

A very good bridge to cross.

One of the first bridges to cross is claiming the writer's mantle. I think that it can be a phase and stage thing.

  • "Well, I kind of do this blog thing, ah, I am learning how to build websites with this course. I joined a community."
  • "Please don't talk to me about writing. I hated it at school. The sales pitch never said anything about writing. I can't write."
  • I am always stuck for ideas to write about; it makes it such a chore!

Or it can be;

  • I didn't think I could write, and it is incredible how quickly I have connected, I have created a blog on a website that I have created, this is my future.

Reading, you may be able to relate.

When it comes to writing, our mindset can have a lot to do with it.

I see a lot of newer and some not so new members trip themselves up with their writing nemesis. One of the things to remember is that we don't have to be 100%, 150% of the time.

Seriously.

Being consistent does more than anything else. I think that many would agree; for sure, we do need to make our thoughts coherently fall onto the screen.

So some days, the writing will be slow, good times to do some maintenance, or work on the technical aspects of your website. The things on your going to list like I am going to get around to it one day.

The Best advice I got;

Some of the best advice I got earlier in the piece, accept that at times you are going to hit that writing wall. It's okay; it doesn't last. If you want to find a benchmark for your performance, go back and read what you have written in previous posts.

You will feel relaxed about it, or you will have that " what was I thinking moment."

Overall you will see that difference and also have that validation that today's work is vastly improved on previous efforts.

This is the writer's poem

The people who can't look at the people that can and think, but you don't understand my situation. The people that can look at the people that can't and think what's your problem.

After a while, you find that you have shifted from the can't write camp to the can write camp, and start wondering what all the fuss was about.

A long way of saying everyone goes through it; no one is immune. Even the best writers will have days when they are challenged. It comes with the territory.

It is part of the gig.

The best thing can be to write, and as the title implies, we don't have to be right all the time ( right maybe in spelling, grammar, etc. that can be helpful). Things balance themselves out over time.

So if you feel that your efforts don't cut the mustard, leave it in the draft version till you feel comfortable with it. It is about blogging; you get to set the rules.

Your journey your rules.

Next time you are challenging yourself, remember that last statement.

It's your journey; don't let others write your story for you.

Hi Alex, that was enjoyable and encouraging. I can't be consistently good at every thing. I liked this part because, no-one can!
Let me quote you, "So some days, the writing will be slow, good times to do some maintenance, or work on the technical aspects of your website. The things on your going to list like I am going to get around to it one day.
I think it was a John Gray, talking about the word "Honor" that it is from the Good Book, and to daily give honor. Well, let us apply that to our writing, to daily give honor, a little attention, some preference to it, because, it becomes the substance that calls to action, persuades, comforts, consoles, changes us, glues together relationships, changes every thing.
Well that was lovely, Alex. Thank you for sharing!

HillHi Suzay,

Making that recognition can lift a burden from our shoulders. It is expressed so often in the community where folks are feeling the pressure of writing or for that matter creating content.

At the core, we can all suffer from this.

It is part of the whole process and one which we can use to our benefit once we understand that it is something we can share in common.

Thank you for your thoughtful response.

Alex

Well-written, Alex...lol...
Yes, the best way to learn to write is to write. If you pretend you are having a conversation (one-sided) it might be easier. As you say, you can talk; therefore, you can write. Just write. Perhaps you should talk your ideas into a tape recorder, then play it back and type it. Maybe that can be a transition.

Hi Fran,
I agree 100%, the only way we get proficient in anything is to repeat the behavior. When it comes to writing, the best thing to do is to just write.

It is interesting I have been helping a newcomer, really struggling, the simple process of reading and commenting has been very helpful, so even in the beginning baby steps are all it takes to build momentum.

That is a brilliant idea to capture those thoughts on the way through, one never knows when inspiration will turn up.

Thank you.

Alex

Thank you for this Alex. Spookily insightful, given a conversation or two I have had recently.
I know now that I am the only one holding me back from being able to say "I am a writer". Once that's out of the way, then I can really begin to explore the options out there.

The title of blogger can seem like a halfway house when in fact we are writers. The words created are the bank.

Claiming the title can create a massive shift in mindset.

Definitely a shift from half pie mode.

Thank you for sharing Twack.

Alex

Always very welcome.
The thought fills me with both excitement and trepidation. I am looking forward to the 'shift' though.

It is kind of basic, yet it can have a huge effect on performance and confidence. the latter being of most benefit.

Great post Alex! Thanks for sharing.

Hi Jimmy, good to see you how is the journey going all good?

You are most welcome glad that you enjoyed this post.

Hi Keisha,

So true, the more we connect with the message that we want to propagate, the more integrity, the more folks will buy-in as well. In the beginning, it can be harder acknowledge our uniqueness.

Especially with those tentative first writing steps.

The more the better write, write, and write some more for good measure.

You too Keisha, stay safe, and keep productive.
