2: How to Organize Your Work Day

If you've come to this blog entry expecting to find wisdom and a model for how to organize your own work day, you've come to the wrong place, my friend. I am currently thrashing around trying to uncover that wisdom myself!

The fact is I am struggling to come up with a good rhythm for my work day. Before WA I would I normally rise before dawn, do the milking and homesteading chores early in the morning, then do some housework and make second breakfast, homeschool, and spend the rest of the day cooking, running the house, doing the admin, running errands, working in some exercise.... that sort of thing.

But now I'm doing WA I'm wedging in my training sessions, doing keyword research and writing content around the edges of my usual routine and the result, after a mere two weeks, is my house is a shambles, we are eating a lot of cereal and weird 'This'll do' food which isn't appetizing at all. I'm also not exercising, I'm barely seeing friends and people outside the house, I'm staying up very late and yet still having to get up early to do the milking, getting headaches, and eye aches and back aches from the computer work...

In short, it's chaos.

So I thought I would put it out to all of you: how do you organize your work day? How do you balance learning new WA material and doing training, creating content for your website(s), replying to messages and social media stuff.... all whilst still being a good parent/ spouse/ partner/ relative/ friend to those around you and being a fully functioning member of society?

There are a lot of very successful people here at WA and I bet they don't sit in a squalid hovel all day, hunched over their computer, eating raising bran with ants in it because SOMEBODY forgot to seal the packaging properly, wearing pijamas after lunchtime, forgetting appointments and no longer being able to find suitable clean clothes to wear when out in public.

I understand from friends who've sold Mary Kay stuff that they are told in their training they should get fully dressed every morning before they start making calls. Apparently you sound different on the phone if you're in PJs compared to when you're dressed.

I plan on posting a discussion on this, but if anyone knows of a good article someone has already written on this issue, I'd be so grateful if you could let me know!

And just for the record. The scenario depicted above of the slovenly ant-eating, PJ-wearing, dysfunctional mother was in no way intended to portray any person living or dead. It was entirely fictitious and any resemblance to anyone sitting at this keyboard right now is completely coincidental.

Block out your time, it is so easy just to sit in front of the computer and do nothing else. Actually, taking time away from the computer will help with your productivity.

I know it is hard to step away, I'm guilty of it more than some but it does need to be done if only to give you time to wash the dishes.

Organize as the last thing you do at night and don't stress if you don't get it all done. It will be there for you in the morning. Just add it to the next day's tasks.

Remember to add in the household stuff too. Your brain can still be working while you do the mindless stuff.

I hear that cleaning your counters with White Vinegar will eliminate the ant problem. ;)

One more thing, smiling while your on the phone changes your tone as well, If you happen to find yourself depressed about the ants carrying away your box of cereal remember they have to eat too.:)

Hi Zaragozana,I was just about to write a post about that exact same topic in my website http://myhelperdotcom.com
I know that what we do can cause burnout if you don't have discipline in how much time you spend on the computer. It sounds like you need this e-book right now . It's not the whole thing but it should help http://media.briantracy.com/downloads/pdf/NoExcusesChp1.pdf
One excellent tip I've learned is to write your tasks down the night before and only what need to accomplish that next day.Writing things out and keeping a list may sound redundant but it does keep you organized and focused.I know exactly how you feel.
Second tip if you can barter with someone for some assistance.
Please leave me comment or pm me so I'll know how you made out O.K?
Try not to drown in the meantime;)

I live in the woods and there is no internet access. The area is a resort area and the home of a 56,000 acre lake. I travel every day to 'work'. My office is at our lake's visitor's center. They have given me a work space next to some huge windows facing the lake.

Although I've gone through the Entrepreneur Certification training, I certainly don't remember it all. I refer back again and again.

My general plan for the day:

Wake up early, feed all the dogs, cats, birds, fish, horses & the chicken
Hike 3-5 miles in the woods
Eat breakfast

Go to work
Answer all my emails - WA notifies you of all activity that pertains to you via email
Write a WA blog - something related to business or WA or just something fun
Write a Website blog - My site is about bicycling for people with disabilities
My site: www.disabledcyclist.com
Write a Street Articles piece
Welcome as many new members as time allows

I use two laptops - one for training and article research, the other for writing and email
Excel spreadsheet keeps all my passwords, favorite resources, and to-do list

My work building closes at 5 p.m. - It is usually a very full day!

Go to the lakefront and ride my bicycle 10 miles
Go back to the little farm about 7:30 p.m. and take care of all the animals

All in all, its a great balance of work, social life, exercise, and chores.

I am afraid if I had internet at home I would be doing WA stuff at all hours of the night, which for me might not be productive.

Works for me.

Your daily schedule sounds dreamy!!! Walking through the woods, having an 'office' away from home...

I don't have a laptop, just the old desktop Mac. I can see the benefits of one, though, in terms of allowing me to work away from home.

I think I could set up at Barnes and Noble if I had a set of really good headphones to block the chatter, cellphone noise and people who inexplicably take their laptops to B and N and watch really loud hip hop music videos over and over and over again.

I need to get better at turning my WA brain on and off. So I can be fully present for the other stuff in my life, that's also very important. Is that called compartmentalising?

1

Compartmentalizing sounds so negative. I prefer to think I live in a state of balance. Of course, I find myself waking up from nightmares related to my website. I guess I don't really turn it off after all.

I have always heard (and believed) that what we think about becomes reality. I think about WA a lot, even on those hikes!

OK! Being in a state of balance. I like that.
