What Theme or Plug-In Would Help This Website?

I manage a non-profit website, and I'm wanting to change the main page. The website is for a museum that has many different activities throughout the year. I would like a scrolling bar across the top to highlight these activities.
I'm not sure if a particular theme could help with this, or if a plug-in would work better with the theme I currently have. I'm currently using Museo for the theme, and the website is rather bland. I had another theme installed, and it looked awesome, but it updated and no matter what I did I couldn't get it formatted properly after the update.
Any help or suggestions would be great. š
