How is boxing like marketing your business?
(photos by waynewallace.com)
Do you like being punched in the face over and over and over again?
If you're like me, the answer would be NO!
Some business owners keep on using the same old antiquated marketing techniques over and over, expecting different results.
If you're a boxer and you keep on getting socked in the face you won't win the fight.
You gotta change up your strategy and do something different.
Albert Einstein said, insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results.
I was watching this show about boxers and it reminded me of marketing of course!
Do you have the focus of George Foreman?
George Foreman is not only a boxing legend, he's a marketing genius and entrepreneur.
I could write several articles about what we can learn from George Foreman, but for now let's talk about his boxing.
Boxers know who they are going to fight next. They watch videos of their opponents past fights. They study their opponent and learn their weaknesses and strong points. In each one of George Foreman's come backs he had tremendous focus, to either kill his opponent or to help the kids with the money he won.
George didn't train to fight everyone in the world, he was focused on taking down his next opponent -- Period!
What are you focused on?
Most business owners use the shotgun approach to marketing.
They load up their shot gun and blam!!!
They spray lots of useless, non effective marketing all over the place and they don't hit anything and they waste a bunch of time and money.
You need to have the focus of George Foreman in your marketing, know who you're marketing to and create marketing materials that deliver with the hitting power of George Foreman!
Was George Foreman scared when he stepped into the ring?
Hell no!
He looked like he wanted to rip the head off his opponent, even in the fights he lost, but he didn't have any fear.
Why?
Because he was focused on killing the opponent, there was no room for fear.
Most small business owners fear picking one target audience and going after it with the focus of George Foreman.
Don't be afraid to pick a focused niche market and go after it and kill it, just like George did with his opponents.
And when George lost a fight he just went back and trained even harder and smarter and made come back after come back. Even after his boxing days, many younger people only know him for his famous George Foreman Grill!
So how do boxers train?
Watch any boxing show or movie. Who's in their corner? The trainer, yelling and screaming, pushing them harder and telling them the things they don't see.
- Keep your head down!
- Go for the ribs!
- Stay away from his right hook!
One of the boxers in the show I watched said, "Sure, I could train myself, but how would I know if I was cheating myself?"
A light bulb went off in my head!
That is so true, as small business owners and entrepreneurs we are so close to our work and business we can't effectively train ourselves. We need help, we need mentors, we need coaches, we need input from other people we can trust. People that are not emotionally attached to our business to give us critical feedback and coaching.
I've hired many mentors and coaches over the years and spent thousands of dollars. They have helped me train and become a better business person.

Thanks! Please share it where you see fit. I wrote it with hopes that others could use it.
Not sure I'd have such a violent approach, but you gotta love Albert Einstein "insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results". Some people are paralyzed by the fear, don't step in the ring, but expect to be a winner.
