Ideas for a Small Planet

3 ideas to help the Planet (and maybe ourselves)

1. Change 1 incandescent light bulb to an LED ligh
A 60W bulb can be replaced by an equavalent 12W LED,
thereby reducing energy consumption by 4/5 per light bulb.

Here are some details worth looking at.

I know, it's math,

but it's good math, Mrs. Beolosky.

Energy is charged per killowatt hour. (kWh)

In this example, (60W - 12W = 48W) times amount of time (8 hours)
you're saving 384 W/hr per bulb, or the amount of energy per hour
consumed if the light is on for 8 hours.

Energy is charged per kWh or 1000 watts per hour times lets say 20 cents.
(The amount your electric company may charge may differ.)

If a light is on for 8 hours a day, (for example 384 w/hr) for a month (30 days)

(30) x 384 W/hr = 11,520 w/hr or 11.5 kWh times 20 cents or $2.30 per bulb.

That doesn't sound like much, but how many bulbs do you have in your house ?
Lets say you use 10 lights per day. Now the figure is $23.00 of just the
energy usage per month for light bulbs, not to mention the cost per bulb.

And then how quickly do incandescent bulbs burn out?

According to Yahoo:

"Incandescent and halogen lights = 1,000 hours (8 hours per day for 125 days)"

So, about every 4 months.

And then how quickly do LED's burn out:

"Fluorescent lights = 10,000 hours (8 hours per day for 1,250 days) LED lights = 40,000 hours (8 hours per day for 5,000 days)"

So, about every 13.5 years.

40 times the life per bulb.

One note here, I would not use CFL (florescents) if at all possible, if the
focus is what's good for the planet, because of the recycling problem.
You shouldn't be simply disposing CFL's in the trash. They need to be recycled.
And frankly, even that's not good for the earth. The mercury gas emitted is
toxic, toxic, toxic.

And how often do you forget to turn out the light when you leave a room ?

2. Eat vegetables.

Eating meat creates all kinds of health problems the civilized world
could do without. By eating meat to the degree that we do, we raise
our blood cholesterol, creating health risks like arterial sclerosis,
high blood pressure, and heart disease, not to mention contribute to
high body acidity which contributes to diabetes, and disease in general.

It doesn't help the planet much either.

Methane from cattle gas contributes to atmospheric carbon pollution.
According to "How stuff Works" (http://animals.howstuffworks.com/mammals/methane-c...)
"Agriculture is responsible for an estimated 14 percent of the world's greenhouse gases."

"The world's 1.5 billion cows and billions of other grazing animals emit dozens of polluting
gases, including lots of methane. Two-thirds of all ammonia comes from cows."

Other "less sophisticated" populations use meat as a condiment, or flavoring
rather than as the main course. Cutting back on meat will make you healthier,
and help the planet as well.

It may also make the cattle happier.

Also there is more and more evidence that eating fresh clean vegetables
improves your health, and well being in general. Recycling the disposable
parts is good for the soil, and helps create a better environment for the
local critters as well.

3. Cut back on using fossil fuels

I'm not even going to get into the 'debate' around the science.

High carbon, and acidity is killing the planet, and ourselves, period.
Now, we could say, hey, we've had a good run, it's been a great 10,000
year experiment this thing called civilization, but the problem is we're
taking other life forms with us as well.

We're well into what is being called "The Great Dying"
dying-study-world-die-off_n_1099986.html)
because of massive shifts in the climate. Because of fossil
fuels and industrialization over the last 200 years in general, we're
raising the acidity of the oceans, changing long standing weather patterns,
and seeing the largest dyoff and extinctions of species in millions of
years.

Using alternative energy sources would be a big help.

These are just three ways of improving our relationship with the planet.
There's an old saying "bleeding from a thousand little cuts" - which is what is happening to Mother Earth.
As an individual we can put a band-aid on our own contribution to those billions of cuts
we collectively impose on the planet.

There are so many other ways we can help. Like insulating our homes, eating in more often cutting back on cell phone usage, and being more aware of our relationship to nature in general.

Maybe just go for a walk in nature to start.
