My Online Marketing Journey - Top 3 Lessons I Learned

In my country, online business is just starting to gain popularity. I say that majority of people here shy away from this kind of venture simply because they don't know where to start and there are very few people who teaching about online business.

By the way, I am from the Philippines.

Despite the fear from online scams and all, I started learning and trying out ways to make money online. That was two years ago. I discovered and joined a local company selling digital products that teaches online marketing concepts and basic facebook marketing.

It was also my first time to learn about affiliate marketing and I loved the idea. I promoted their products and guess what? After 3 months, I made my first sale! But let me tell you, it was really a struggle. Not to mention I burnt out money on pay per click ads. Not to mention the bunch of online courses I studied and watched. I suffered from information overload. I made a lot of mistakes. I almost quit. But when that day came, that first sale made me believe that it is really possible to make money online.

Now, along the journey, I witnessed the good and the bad, the ups and downs that an online entrepreneur will experience along the way.

Lesson 1: Begin With An End In Mind

It is hard to build a website, to build a list, to schedule a blog post, to schedule posts in social media. You really need to be mentally though. But if you can already see your end goal, your success, you will and eventually will make that first sale.

Lesson 2: Building An Online Business Is Like Planting A Bamboo Tree

You may not notice your progress yet. You may say that. "Okay I'm done with this! For months, I have been blogging, promoting nothing happens!"

Well, let me tell you that building an online business is like planting a bamboo. Bamboo plant is durable and flexible. Why? Because it has a sturdy FOUNDATION.

A bamboo expands it's roots all the way down the hard part of the soil layer until such time that it becomes sturdy enough that it grows like 91 cm (3 ft) within a 24-hour period, at a rate of almost 4 cm (1.5 in) an hour (a growth around 1 mm every 90 seconds, or one inch every 40 minutes.

It's not yet time to quit now that you are still building a sturdy foundation. Each day is a day of learning. Maybe you're still on the process of expanding your roots.

Lesson 3: Don't Be To Hasty To Make Money... Continue To Give Value To The World And Money Will Follow

This reminds me of the quote of the great Confucius, "Choose a job you love and you never ever have to work the rest of your life." Give value to the world without expecting something in return. You'll be surprised one day that it's all worth the effort.
