I've built my site on straight http. I'm now going to add in a membership module to it. I was thinking of adding the SSL component for that reason. Am I going to have issues

All of your http links will be redirected to https, so it's not a big deal. rankings will remain the same, and anyone linking to you will just be redirected to the same page, but https.

Thanks :)

There will come a time soon that you will have to do it, sooner is better than later, one link at a time, one page at a time.

Better to convert your whole site to SSL.

But what does this mean for previous links that I have built?

You submit a sitemap to your https site in Google console and make the https version the main site.

SSL is the way forward and there is lots of information here. You can try the search bar above.

Sooo... as long as I update the site map the external links will still count for me even though they are http links?

As far as I know SSL is for your site only. It will help rankings and any outbound link has nothing to do with it. Inbound links will cause problems if they are not secure.

For example Images, scripts, and iframes cause HTTP requests. Links do not.

Try it and see what happens. You can always revert back.

I don't think it'll have anything to do with your ranking but it surely will increase your site trust.
Jerome

What about links that I have built externally?

Are they your links or are they links to other websites. If they are links to other websites that are unsecured, you will not be able to change it. The source will have to do this.
Jerome

I have a lot of external links that are not from my project. Guest blogging is part of what I do. Asking everyone to update the link would be more than a little inconvenient for them and me both.

For the last 90 days I have been working very hard on launching a new site. Google has yet to give it much love but I'm killing it on Alexa and about to break the million mark

So you have two sites in the same niche? One has a long domain name and some authority, while the other has a short domain name and no authority?

I would just continue working on the one with the most traffic and momentum.

Almost right - 1 has some authority and a long domain name.

The other has existed since 2013 and is a short domain name.

The short domain name is actually branded much better to me than the long domain name though I do see how I can springboard off either one very easily.

The issue is I know Google doesn't like long domain names. I was under the impression that as long as it was built as a brand it would be fine. I'm questioning my take on that thought at this time which has led me to the question asked.

After 90 days with the amount of work that you know i have put in... shouldn't I be seeing some organic ranking success by now?

What's the domain name and what kind of work have you put in?

Sometimes you have to wait longer - I've seen it before. It took 6 months for my coffee site to take off, and more than a year for another one. Others have done great in 3 months.

Depends on what type of content you're creating and how you're trying to generate traffic.

long domain:
http://startyourownaffiliatemarketingbusiness.com/

aged domain:
http://viraltnteam.com/

I would have to be doing some modifications to bring the aged domain into the project.

I don't think an "aged domain" has as much power as people give them credit for. Go with the one with momentum!

The short domain is nice though!

Why did you start a new domain in the first place? Are those reasons no longer important?

There is not "right answer" Whichever you choose, as long as you are consistent, the website can be a success.

Long domain was started because of keywords though I know that is not as important as it once was. I also wanted to prove that it could be done as long as you were sure to show it as a brand.

To get a short domain I have plans to do a redirect at some point which would go on my biz cards but I'm not ready for that.

I've been pouring momentum into this project and it is killing it on Alexa. I would just expect to see results from Google by this point.

Had I known I could use ViralTNTeam with this I would have done it in a heartbeat. But that was one question left unanswered when I got started.

yeah, that's a tough question. I can't say one is better than the other. Which one is getting more traffic?

The long domain name... but it has also had much more attention of recent.

My best idea may be simply to work them both simultaneously.

Hm, if they are two sites in the same niche, seems like a waste of work. Perhaps your long domain can be just for bootcamp, aimed at getting new WA members and targeting people in the IM niche. Perhaps your short domain name can be more of a "general brand" for you, doing stuff like consulting, IRL business meets, and more general "entrepreneur" style stuff.

Just an idea of how you can brand them differently and get both sites earning.

We are tracking... not exactly sure how it will end up but your point is highly relevant

Had I realized that I could use a pre-existing domain when I got started we would not be having this conversation. However, this was an over sight on my part so it is what it is.

If you're not doing anything with yet, I would just put on the back burner for now, just my opinion.

Put which one on the back burner?

I just found a blog article which includes a list of ping sites. It was at this point that I realized that the concept of pinging did not appear to be covered within the WA tr

And a ping is ?????

Good question. in general, it's short data blast for information. Have you ever seen a navy movie where the send out a sonar ping to find out where another ship is. Same basic idea on a network. One computer will send a quick blast of information to notify or receive information from another computer.

In this particular case, a ping is your site sending a notification about your site to another site that then aggregates that information to a bunch of other sites. By default, WP will send out a ping to all the sites in your ping list every time you make a change like adding or editing a page or post who then notify other sites. The ping optimizer, reduces this to a single notification when the page or post is created.

WP also uses ping backs. This is when you create a post that talks about a post on another WP site, the other site is notified and if enabled a link to your post will be added to the comments. I haven't actually played with this, but I think it just requires putting a link to the original post in the content. However, ping backs have frequently been used for spam and are therefore often disabled on sites.

Thank you so much, yes of course I have watched many movies like that " search for Red October" i think was one. Did not understand the connection, now I have got thank you!! I suspect i was not alone, just the one that asked the question!! Do I have to put in a Plug in for the ping optimiser?

Wow!!! Another reason I love WA - such helpful people. You rock. :)

Yeah sorry. I listed it in my comment at the bottom but it's Ping Optimizer Plugin. Do a search and the wp plugin repository should be the top result.

And I suspect you're probably right. Like everyone, I kind of take for granted what I know, so it's better to ask so I realize what I kind of skipped over and go back and cover it. Glad I could help.

I wanted to let you know that beause of my extreme appreciation of this intereaction, it has become a pivotal part of my article for today - http://startyourownaffiliatemarketingbusiness.com/affiliate-marketers-dream

Watched a training video done by Jay a couple of years ago and he uses http://www.pingoat.net/. I also use it to ping all of my new articles to 60+ services at once. My content ranks very high usually very quickly so I'm a fan :)

Used wisely, this is a great way to broadcast our message further!

Thanks for your thoughts on this.

LOL I know some training like GSniper I think were strong on "pinging" but I must admit that I don't.

Thanks 'Numerous' this is an excellent lesson learned, for me at least.

Glad to hear it. It was something that I didn't pick up right away when I started using Wordpress. It's one of those obscure features that don't get advertised very often.

I've made major changes to many articles already as my way of getting everything on target. Do you think I am already listed as a spammer? If so is there anything that can be done to correct that or is it going to be a time thing.

I will use your recommended plugin... thanks for the tip.

You're probably fine. Most people don't realize it and do the same thing and I'm guessing you don't have enough pages or made enough edits yet for it to be a problem.

Look at my site and you might change your mind... lol - I release at one new piece of 1500 words in length daily. http://startyourownaffiliatemarketingbusiness.com/

The default ping site listed in Wordpress is pretty good by itself. You can add more if you want, but it's not really necessary. I would also get the Ping Optimizer Plugin. By default Wordpress sends a ping with every update to your posts. This can be bad because if you make a bunch of edits to a post it will ping on everyone of them and you might get flagged as being spammy.

And to answer your question, yes definitely use it.
