Hi all, simple question here. If Google reads from left to right, is it okay (wise) to have widgets on the left side of your website as opposed to the right side, or does it matter

Hi Vanessa

I did some research on this recently, and apparently it makes no difference in terms of engagement (http://www.matthewwoodward.co.uk/experiments/left-vs-right-sidebar-which-one-performs-better/), but you make a good point about how Google reads your page!

I have both - my homepage sidebar is on the right, but all of my posts and pages have it on the left.. for what it's worth, they all rank just fine :)

Really appreciate your input Claire. Thank you and for that link as well.

You're welcome :)

People read from left to right (except in some countries) so if you want people to read your content first and your widgets later then put your content on the left and the widgets on the right. You want Google to read your content first too so having your text on the left is better, in my opinion.

Hi Marion, thanks for the response. That's what I think as well and if Google is reading the widget first, can this possbly hinder your site's ranking?

no

Thanks Ru.

I don't think it's so critical, but in one of his videos Kyle recommends putting them on the right side

Hi rufat, thanks for the response and I know that's the recommendation, but I still see people do otherwise. That's why I asked the question.
