Google Wants Engagement
The more people who social your work the more Google will say hey this must be interesting to people because lots of people are sharing it. Most of you know that even if you're brand new to internet marketing.
What you may not know is that Google also takes how many comments a piece of content gets. In fact comments are one of the biggest determining factors that they use and the better the comment the more they pay attention.
It's one thing to say hey nice article thanks for sharing but if you can get a conversation going in your comments that's pure gold! It's really helps to if multiple people reply to one person's comment. This shows a deeper level of engagement than just the owner of the blog and the person commenting.
Google main objective is to bring there users interesting and engaging content so believe me this is a huge factor that in my experience supersedes just about everything else they use to decide where you're ranked at.

It's pretty easy to notice if you have a lot of article on something like Street Articles… the ones with social sharing/commenting are *consistently* the most visible in Google.
absolutely they are. That's because Google knows if people are sharing it on their social networks than many other people will be interested in it as well.
Since joining WSS. I've definitely noticed some nice jumps in rankings. Thank you for starting it!
I remember when I first started writing at street articles I would pop over the other articles and leave the odd comment, hoping that I would get a few visits from others in return (and I did) but one thing I noticed was that it was all the same people commenting on each other's articles. Then a few weeks later I got invited to WSS by Luke (That_helpful_dude) and I was like "Oh,..it's YOU guys" WSS really is a great group and not only have I learned a lot by being a part of it, almost as much as I've learned from WA directly, I have also improved the rankings of a lot of my articles
Cham's youtube videos are pretty cool too.
After you get a few ranked and start to get a bit of a following you start to get more comments from search traffic as well. I have one article in SA that has had 63 comments because my WSS friends got me to page one spot one then the search traffic took off and people engaged in the on going conversation.
I have seen it work like that time and time again, that article is still ranked number 1 for the keyword and I wrote it months and month ago.
One of my favorite blogs in Culinary Tidbits. The guy that writes the blog has got to be the best source of information on organic food and how nutrition effects the body I have ever seen.
Well, as a general rule, when i read an article, post or blog, I usually get engaged in it. I try to relate to the material, look at it from various angles and so I usually respond with more than just a general "nice post" or whatever. I love learning new things and when I find something I know nothing about, I will ask questions, make comments and really get into serious dialogue with the writer, if they wish to do so. Bland comments are only for the things that you find spammy or just not that interesting. I am so hoping to be participating this Friday in my first hangout with WSS! Thanks for the welcome and I will ask lots of questions, once I get over being the new kid on the block. Not really a shy person, but I tend to watch and listen for awhile and get the lay of the land. Great blog, Ty.
What you just said is exactly what Google looks at, They know the difference between nice post and a serious question or engagement and that's what they look for.

Yes I got your reply on your Smogrettes site. Started to order last night and my new Dell had a "I refuse to work attack" and I had to have my IT friend come and rescue me...forgot all about ordering e-cigs...I was so busy smoking the real thing...I am not a tech person and any burp my computers get makes me a bit crazy. I need to order today so I will have them by Christmas....get the other set for my daughter-in-law who needs to quit smoking but has trouble doing it cold turkey. This could save us both! Oh, can't wait for tonight at 8 ET.....looking forward to the hangout and seeing what all it is about and learning from you and the others. Thanks!

Awesome to have you on board, we are just moving over from Facebook and getting everyone used to the new Google community platform. Try making one of our hangouts sometime where we discuss different aspects of how to use the group.
You can also ask in the community but I like to get a bit more advanced in our discussions =)
