Get Your Site Reviewed

Hey everyone, I wanted to see if I could help clear a few things up about internet marketing to maybe make things a bit clearer for some of my new friends around WA here. I am always getting questions that are a result of the person not understanding the big picture.

Sure we all understand that our logo is like our sign but what some people I think have trouble connecting with is the over all flow of a website. Yesterday's Holiday Hot Seat really taught me a lot about how people might find the front page of my website.

For those of you who didn't catch the Wabinar Jay reviewed I think it was 4 websites, mine was among them. What Jay told me was that I needed to really focus on my main keyword in the main page of the website.

No I don't mean I needed to use the keyword more I mean I needed to make the page reflect the keyword so that it made more sense to people when they land on the page. In other words relevance is very important.

I was so focused on bringing people to my site via my blog that I really didn't focus enough on the main page, It really struck me when he said that people visiting that page had already decided to buy they were there because they wanted help deciding which brand to buy.

I mean it was so obvious but that's why we should always have someone else look at our work. When you are to close to a project you don't always see the big picture. I have had people ask me time and time again to review their websites and I always go over it objectively, but for some reason it seems to be impossible to look at your own site with that same objectivity.

Ask your friends or people in WA to review your site on a regular basis especially if your new to all of this. The insights you gain from people are invaluable. I have started making changes to my main page and I have to admit it's already much better than it was before and I have more changes I plan to make.

If you need someone to have a look at your site you can always ask me in the comments below. I will be happy to have a look at see what suggestions I can make for you. I only ask that you complete the Online Entrepreneur Certification - Getting Started (Level 1) course before asking for a review you should make sure there is something there to review first.

Understanding the big picture of how your site and marking should look and flow is essential to becoming successful and the more you understand it the better results you can expect.

I would like for you to review my site when you get a chance. I actually have 2. They are www.howtostaydry.com and www.whatisthebestwaytogetridofroaches.com. Thanks.

Some sites I've gotten lots of education from were very ugly. Some from Rob Taylor, James Straw, even the Newbie Club, which hasn't been updated since the early 2000s.

It was what inspired me to create "Plain Door to Success." It's these non-glittery almost-all plain text websites that got me going on the path I'm on now.

Most people miss these and that's a shame, but today, there's nothing at all wrong with making a site look professional. That's as far as it should go in most cases.

I notice that a lot of European and Asian sites are far simpler than those of the United States.

It's the content inside that really matters, not how elaborate the site is. I tend to make mine on the simpler side, though I utilize other media when I can.

I made my way back here from the Writers Secret Society! Thanks Ty for everything you do!

Daniel

I agree that at the heart of everything is the content but a little window dressing can go a long way. If you have 2 clothing stores side by side each carries the exact same things but one store piles there stock on the floor and the other puts theirs on racks and displays which one do you think people will buy from more.

I think the older the internet gets the more people kind of expect a more professional look and feel.

You're right about that. The sites I mentioned are from the early Internet and have not been changed. The authors of these are all billionaires and don't need to be fancy like we do. It's gotten so people do expect that and websites don't look crude anymore.

In those days the only wordpress there was, were the infamous web page editors. My first one was an all-html window because all the WYSIWYG ones were not free.

Yeah, LOL I've seen garment stores like that! Maine was pretty notorious for those kind of stores in any product! They sure had some bargains though! I think we are past the Wild Wild Web now, as it was once called.

It doesn't take much to dress-up a site these days.

My PlainDoortoSuccess site is a dinosaur today and though I still own the domain, it can only be found on the WayBackMachine today in its old form.

It was captured by Internet Archives before I retired it in 2011.

Jim Straw's site is still kicking! http://www.businesslyceum.com/

Mr. Straw still teaches business on old fashioned terms and I think still calls the Internet a hall of smoke and mirrors. LOL

The Wild Wild Web lol I never heard that before, it's catchy

It sure was in those days. It was full of bugs, slow, restricted and no protection! When I got in on it, it was still before the 2.0 movement. My earliest times were during the BBS days but I had little interaction with it. The Internet was a very dangerous place. My oldest article is about that.

I always loved Dargonzine. It is one of the oldest continually-running ezines on the Internet. It goes way before the WWW started in 1996. I still am a subscriber to it since I got on in 1999.

Couldn't agree more with this.
As I once said building a nice shiny site without focusing on what it's about is missing out on those valuable buyers.

Very true Ty. You get about 2 seconds to capture your customer :)

yeah people don't take long to decide if they are going to stay do they

Great post. Much learned.

Thank you, I'm glad it was helpful to you.

Loving the new look of the site Ty I was checking it out a few days ago when you had posted new blog material and was wondering about the home page. I was trying to work out what keyword you were ranking for but it makes better sense now.

I must watch the webinar sounds like it has invaluable info. I have to say though you have always advised me on the the best way forward and it has been brill as my site is sitting happily at No 1. I feel now I have to up it a gear and try and get it scaled up gather more traffic and start a sales pitch as I haven't up till now gained a cent from the site. A few click throughs but no sales. Maybe if you get a chance you can give me another look over.

Cheers Bro!

Id be happy to bro. I will get back to you tomorrow after I give it a peek. I think in your case you just need to rank for more keywords which shouldn't be hard for you to do. Your site is really nice.

A Great post for me. I wished for a review and there is someone to volunteer . Please check your PM.Thanks in advance..

I just reviewed the site and sent you a PM with my suggestions tho i did forget to mention that on the about me page you didn't introduce yourself. I would ad a quick hello my name is at the very top of the text there.

Once you make the changes you to the site I will be happy to do a follow up review just PM me when you get to that point or if you have any questions for me.

I like the idea of keeping focused on the idea of your Website material. That is a great strong point. Thanks.

Yeah jay is a smart cookie. I listen to anything he says and take it to heart because he really knows his stuff. That review has changed my entire outlook on how to approach things on that site.

I learned a lot yesterday too! I would let you take a look at my site but I am being slammed enough for now. lol

No worries, I understand exactly what you mean. Let me know if you ever change your mind I'm not going anywhere =)
