Is this scary enough for you?

Breaking news this morning is that UK based web hosting company 123-reg has accidentally deleted a number (not yet specified) of client websites and may not be able to recover them all.

There have been a number of announcements over several days from 123-reg, starting with the news that there was 'a connectivity issue' and subsequently upscaling to 'customers who have local backups are advised to rebuild their sites'.

Ouch. What about the trusting innocents without a local backup?

One of the clients affected is a legal firm who says they are starting a group compensation case and the signs are that others, especially major clients may also start legal proceedings.

This one will run and run, but meantime, if you never did backups before, do them now. You never know what's lurking round the corner.

Be safe, my friends, not sorry.

There's plenty of advice here on WA about backups. As far as I know, the most recent is from the indefatigable Marion Black:

Sometimes even more often :).

Gobsmacked that such stupidity can happen with such a big hosting site.

Social media is smoking over this - some very hacked off people out there.

Crazy!!!

They say that the affected service - their VPS service - is 'unmanaged', yet they 'managed' to delete no one knows how many websites. That's a crazy contradiction in itself!
