Hi I have just set up a free Wordpress shop on one of my wife's equestrian sites. It is not yet live, but it works really well in tests it is WP- On-Line Store and it is based on the OS Commerce store front, it is customisable and has many features. I think it will do everything you want. It works on WA hosting but needs a few tweaks. Use the help that is in the plug-in and message me if you need help!
Sometimes it can be a good test (if the sales of the product are unproven) to throw up an ebay store or put together an etsy page (or both, depending on the type of product) just to get an idea of demand.
If there is a proven track record for sales and interest, then their own store on their website may be a definite option, but no sense in investing the time and energy until there is a the reality of demand there.
I have used MarketPress and find that it works really well for small shops just getting started.
It has a plethora of options and is scalable.
