With your H1 and H2 main headers complete, it's time to look at the subheaders. The purpose of the subheaders is similar to that of chapters in a book. You are breaking the article into smaller bites. Readers like small bites. So do search engines.

That way, when Google scans the article, or when your reader reads through the table of contents, each section's purpose is clearly defined.

Typically, these will be H3 subheaders, but can include H4 and H5 nested under your H3. So your structure might be:

H1/H2: Writing a Post Using an Outline

H3: Structure

H3: Main Header

H3: Sub Headings

H4: purpose of subheadings

H4: how to choose a subheading

and so on. the idea is that your H4 heading is a subheading of the H3. H3 is a subheading of the H2. If you also use H5 headings, they will be a subheading of your H4.

You may have several H3 sub headings. Use as many as you need to break the sections into individual points. It's recommended to keep yourword count under 300 for each subheading. So if your article is 1500 words, you should have at least 5 subheadings. You might have more, of course.

Sometimes that is not possible. But when you can, keep the subheadings very direct and clearly defining what that section is about.

Use your keyword in some of your subheadings but not all. If you have 5 subheadings, you might have 2 or 3 with keywords included.

I've always given your training to members who are having problems writing.

Or others who asked for some assistance in writing their content.

This is the first time I'm reading, and I must thank you for this training.

There are a lot of reminders that I had forgotten. I made a screenshot of the list of the introductory paragraph.

I will be adding my list to this and print it off for ongoing and future use.

2 pgs notes later. Wow its gonna be long. Best for me so far is 350 and I feel like I take to much to begin with, plus on a phone. But I'll do whatever it takes to "get what I want" or you say reach my goal. Thanks , can I follow you?

Thank you so much for this very informative training, Diane. I find this very useful for me as I have scattered thoughts all the time. I just write whatever i want to write. I need to change some headings, subheadings, introduction, conclusion etc. Omg! Looks like I need to restructure all my posts lol. I need to keep referring to this to hopefully come up with a good post. Thanks again for sharing!

Hi Diane,
Thanks for sharing this.
In my case, I cannot change the size of my title head. Also, I only have H1 to h4 for the subheadings. I cannot even see the icon for changing the color of the font. Does it have to do with the theme? What theme can you suggest to do these, if ever? Please suggest a theme that would not require paid plugins, I do not have income yet to pay for paid plugins.
