Step 1: Create your PAGE framework

All websites should have a core group of pages that make up the framework of your site. In Wordpress, these are referred to as "Pages" and should not be confused with "Posts". We will get to the differences between pages and posts are a bit later in this short tutorial.

When you are first setting up your Wordpress website it's helpful to get right into creating a few pages so that you have the initial structure of the site ready to go.

Follow these steps:

By clicking on the "Pages" menu on the left of your Wordpress administration page, select "Add New".

With your wordpress installation there will most likely already be a "Home" page created, but if not you can create it along with the following pages.

  • Home
  • Blog
  • About Me
  • Contact
  • Privacy Policy
At this point you do not need to worry about the content for these pages as you are only focusing on setting up your website structure for now.

After creating the above pages your admin area will look like this:

Make sure that you "publish" your pages so they are "live" when you visit your website. It is OK to have your site visible to readers while you work on it. Also, in the next step you will learn how to setup your static home page and you need to have your "home" and "blog" pages published in order for this to work.

Next we will discuss setting up your website homepage to use a "Static Page".

How do I make a website w WP? Let me rephrase, I have a site I dont want to have a blog on. I am using the Godaddy website builder currently which is user friendly. But I cant even find a way to make this a website with WP. I just see blog features. I could actually get away with a blank theme and I create the site with my info and pics. I keep getting answers in the Live Chat that its WP you can do what you want. But I am a newbie when it comes to this. I dont know where to go to let me make my own website with no blog. Can you help me or point me to someone who can.

Thanks, Vincent

I ran into the same problem that you're having and I have found that there is a short book that I got on my Kindle called WordPress 2 go. It is short, succinct and to the point. I guess I thought when I went to the 2600 available samples that it was going to give me something that was somewhere near ready to go and what I found out is that WordPress gives you the tools to design your website page but there is quite a bit to it and this guide is instructional and does a good job of explaining it.

is it just me or is wordpress just difficult? i need help because of all the plugins, etc.whats wrong with wix?? i doesn't work??? have a lot of questions..

it seems overwhelming when you first look at the dashboard, one minute you are looking at a nice theme the next minute you are inside a dashboard wondering where did everything go! And one day you wake up and it all seems so easy...

so just start at lesson one and take it step by step, there are no plugins that you need right now, two come with the site - the akismet is no longer needed, the hosting created a new technology so we don't need anti-spam now, but Kyle is in the process of updating the lessons to reflect the new changes

your new theme will come with two plugins and for now that is all you need - you have all in one seo and ewwwoptimizer, the others mentioned aren't needed, the akismet and exclude pages from navigation

Next you will get onto the lesson about creating pages, notice now you don't have to create an about me or a privacy policy because with updates to the platform there is now a sitecontent feature in the siterubix menu [that big blue button on the left side of this page] and the templates are in there, you will simply put your own details in there when the time is right and publish them onto your site with the click of a button.

When you create new pages in your dashboard and if they don't appear then simply use the search bar at the top of any WA page and look for training on creating menus, some themes need us to do that to see our new pages

it is a little bit of a learning curve but then you will be flying it, and wordpress is better than wix

Dear GGuerrerp,
Good Day!
Good question.

Go to Google Search and check out the following:
support.wordpress.com, or
www.wpglobalsupport.com.

Review WA dashboard

WIX, coming from Great Britain, has interesting free templates for one year. (not as many as WA-templates, free). WIX will cancel a website made with them for more than a year and your monthly fee is not paid. That can be frustrating, and getting back up and running may be an issue.
Be patient with Wordpress and WA.

Do you create "pages only" for all content on the website that is under my main menu (tabs) that will not change in the future Or should I create them as posts instead and only keep the home page as a page? They will have a date on them and if they are never going to change why do I want to make them posts instead? I'm really confused....I have more than just privacy page etc.... I will have a ton of content because I chose a medical educational niche and there are many main tabs to info, should this info be posts that people can go to from the blog roll that is within my information under the main tabs? If so, do I title them differently?
Reply
Labman Premium
Make sure you have the credentials for a medical site or at least have some MD's consulting.

Google is particular about medical education. They often will not rank a site that doesn't have authority.

Sad but true.

WordPress has nothing to do with a domain extension. It is just the tool that the user uses to create the website.

This training was updated last in 2012. Is it still recommended to have your homepage a "static" page? Or should the homepage be the blog roll? Does it make a difference for SEO and ranking?
Reply
HelenpDoyle Premium
Don't quote me, as some famous person said, but I think the choice is personal preference. I have the static landing page going to the page about my site with my About Helen as a child hanging off this page. Then I have a blog roll beside it.

Others go to the blog roll.

You choose.

Is there a way make post within your pages, without them posting to your home page? I can't figure it out. I was thinking maybe you just add a widget, but I guess not. So confused by siteRubix!
Reply
Juneyo Premium
There are 2 ways in my opinion. You can create an internal link in your pages that goes to the respective post.

Another way is to create a category for your posts and put that category below your menu pages as a dropdown.

If you don’t want your posts to appear on your homepage blogroll, you can change your homepage to a static homepage instead and make any pages you want to be your homepage.

To do that, go to Settings – Reading - Front page displays. Select a static page (select below) then choose what page you want.
Reply
BobBarr Premium
By default, all blog posts go to your blog roll. The blog roll, though, doesn't necessarily need to be on your site's home page. Most themes have the capability to make the home page a static page which then allows you to create another page for your blog roll.
Reply
Celecity Premium
I saw that but why can't there be more than one page for your blog post?
Reply
BobBarr Premium
You can create multiple blog rolls. I haven't done that myself though.

Here's a link to a discussion on that topic that should give you some ideas:
Reply
Celecity Premium
Thank you! I think I found out! You can put categories in your menu and I believe can have them on specific pages. I will have to try it out.

Your Blogs can fall into Categories.
Reply
EdEastman Premium
Bob if I were to have each keyword page to have its own blogroll then it would seem like the posts quantities would be of various levels.

Some would be highly active with others with no or very little activity.

That is why I was thinking of having one blogroll that serves all keyword pages. There won't be any dead spots then. What do you think?
Reply
BobBarr Premium
Since that's certainly a potential problem, you'd need to put some effort into balancing your posts across the various categories.

One thought would be to set up your categories so that they each contain several related keywords. Doing that might make the "balancing act" a little easier to manage.
Reply
EdEastman Premium
Thanks Bob

A couple thoughts that I had about this.

1) If I were to have only 1 blog roll page, I would then pull all of the comments from the various pages together. I would then not have pages that looked like there was no interest.

2) I am not current on the expectations of Google. I had the impression that my blog roll could serve as the required activity level.

As I have been hearing, many think that a blog by me should be required 3 times a week with a minimum of 1,000 words each.

My feeling is that an active blog roll will definitely satisfy that.

Your feedback please.

Thanks
Ed

BobBarr Premium
I think it's more a matter of a personal preference than anything else. Some people prefer to have a single blog roll for their whole site while others prefer to create separate blog rolls based on categories that they've chosen.

I've been here for over a year and have yet to figure out how do you screenshot a portion of a page like I see often in these tutorials and how do you create a post or page that has the previous page and next page buttons? Also the page 1 of 4 arrow at the top here?
Reply
chrisbailey Premium
To take a screenshot with a PC, you can press Alt+PrtScn which will copy the screen. You can then paste it into paint or another program to edit.

As for the arrows, that is done when you create a training here at WA and have multiple pages.
Reply
HelenpDoyle Premium
Donna, type this into the 'need help' box and have a look at it. It is also done on your keyboard but gives a better quality screen shot.

how to take professional screenshots.

If you want to only use parts of it open the screen shot with Paint and move it around as you like. You can also add the arrows etc this way.
Reply

Which way gives a better quality? The keyboard way?
Reply
HelenpDoyle Premium
Using the Microsoft Icon key and prtscn. On my computer this method places the screen shots in a folder on my C drive under Pictures called 'Screen Shots" (fancy that!). If you then want to play with the image open it in Paint. And then go to town.

You will need to create a new user with Administrator privileges. Then log out and relog in with your new user. The admin user can't be deleted but you can change it to have Subscriber privileges. This provides a modicum of protection to your site and adds another level of security to your login.

Reply

Hi. Static pages are unchanged pages, they are constant. The content basically does not change on a static page, so the viewer sees the same thing each time they view it. Hope that helps. Michelle

Michelle04 Premium
Also, your blog wouldn't be going on your home page. Your home page should explain about your site (usually) and let the visitors know what they are going to be reading and seeing. Your blog should be about your niche, writing about products or reviews of items, etc. and you would add to that regularly.

Barry that's not what I understand from Labman, I believe he's saying that the home page stays as it is created and the following pages of content are the pages you post on(blog on) under the main topics as you discuss how the content relates to the purpose of the website which is stated on the home page. Y'all need to check out what I have just said for I am a beginner trying to make sense of it all..
Reply
Szokie Premium
I'm already confused in the first sentence. He says "you set your front page to be a "Static Page" called "Home", and chose for your blog posts to be contained within your "Blog" page." But that doesn't make sense. Is this "blog page" another page or is it NOT another page? Is your "blog page" another page like your privacy policy and about me pages? Because he called it a "page" which to me means, page. ! What does he mean blog page? Make a separate page where all of your blogs go, just updated paragraphs you write once in a while? So does that mean your home page never changes?

A static page doesn't change. If you add pages to your menu, like an about page, it is static and will not change. If you add categories to your menu or use a blog roll on your home page than it will be changing regularly because new posts are added....therefor, it is not static. If you want your home page to be static you can do this in Settings > Reading or Appearance > Customize

I've been contemplating a static page using the about me and then readers can click on the menu for the blogs. I'm using 2014 template. My issues with the "blog roll" is the comment section. The only way to leave a comment is by clicking the title of the blog. I'm not receiving any feedback as a result. Maybe it's the theme or maybe there is a way to customize. Also, there is a long space after the end and to the comments. Anyone that is familiar with the 2014 theme that knows a good fix for this, would be greatly appreciated.

In truth you can use pages or posts any way you like its just that pages are usually used for static content and pages for updated content, but it does not really matter as long as your readers enjoy the site they don't care about these issues just solve their problems and they will come to you for more, they don't care if the solutions come in posts or pages

you can make so many review pages and link them to one page using the menu page in the appearance page of your word press, for example, assuming you have a site for dogs you can write 6 different types of dog review and put them under 6 different pages and then put all the 6 under my dog review. i just hope that this helps. Thanks

Hi emcash,

Two things to try:

1) Try using a different browser
2) Try using a different computer

Most issues I've seen so far with the Wealthy Affiliate website have to do with the web browser people are using; just switch browsers or computers and things should go smoothly again. If not, send us another report.

Hope this helps!

@emcash! iloveflash is correct. I uses FireFox Beta and I haven't had a problem yet with building mine. When you start building a website, the best thing to do is always save it to a .csv file and whenever you want to go back and start where you last stopped, it will come up because it is saved to your computer. Microsoft word is good to use as well.

Hi there Obakeng. When you click on the build your web site menu, it takes you to the Wordpress Express page. There you find three columns (1)Website Name (2) Installed URL (3) Action. Click on your domain name under the first Column "Website Name" and that will open a new Word Press window where you will log in using your username and password. Thereafter, you choose a Theme for your page and then go about setting it up.

Good tutorial. My question is how do I get the content on the home page? Or do I make that a blog post?
Reply
iloveflash Premium
Go to Settings > Reading in your WordPress admin panel and you can choose between blog posts or a static page for your front page. I think it's recommended to make a static page though. I don't remember why.

myzone2012 Premium
Hi Williamhall. To put content on your home page you have to go to pages under your Dashboard. This will give you to options (1) All pages and (2) Add New. From the tutorial, I guess you have already created your HOME page, so you click on All pages. This takes you to the page where you have all the pages you have created like, About Me, Content, Blog, Home etc. Put your mouse over the Home and you will see Edit/ Quick Edit/ Trash/View. Click on Edit and that will take you to the page where you can add content to your home. The same apply for adding contents to other pages. When you are done adding contents, remember to click on the blue UPDATE button. And that, my friend, shall do the trick.

Boy, am I frustrated. I did the Home page, click edit, added content and found the publish button after I clicked "publish" on the upper right hand side of the page. The follow up said pupblished. But when I click on the site, it is the same Business Lite page advertising Business Pro. The Home, Blog, etc are there but nothing happens. Should I try another template?

Try creating a custom menu from Appearances > Menu and adding links to the pages you want on a custom menu. That should make navigating much easier. As for setting the home page as a static page, go to Settings > Reading and choose Static page. If all of that fails then something is wrong with either your template or your web browser, or both. Try the instructions first and see.

Hi, I'm having a bit of a problem. When I first made my site it had a page called "home". The problem is it isn't listed on my list of published pages. If I make a page called "home" like this guide tells me then I end up with two pages called "home". But when it comes to setting a static home page I can't select the home page that my site came with. This is probably the simplist thing in the world to fix but I'm at a loss.

Hello Tekler. I had the same problem, then I discovered that the already made Home page was actually the Sample page. I had a hard time trying to change it to my Home page so I Trashed it and Created a new one. Hope this helps.

I have a paid domain but am practicing on the free Google blogs. I found out that one can transfer your work under "Set up your custom domain". Is it possible then to transfer it to WA? Perhaps then I may not be able to edit it with WordPress.
Reply
Carson Premium
Hi Aden. You will not be able to transfer a site seamlessly from Google Blogs to Wordpress. My suggestion would be to start from scratch with your wordpress website. Moving from a Google Blog to another domain is going to create duplicate content and it will not be good for SEO. Wordpress is a very good option for building your websites as it gives you a lot of functionality and customization options. You can do anything with a wordpress website.

Included with your Wealthy Affiliate membership is the ability to host your websites on our hosting network. You can create a wordpress website with the click of a button.

I'm happy to hear that you are wanting to start using WordPress and discontinue with Google Blogs. A very good decision.

How do I change the order of my tabs such as Home/About Me/Blog.... ?? Do I have to delete and redo?
Reply
Carson Premium
Changing the order of menu items is done in one of TWO ways.

1 - If you are using a custom menu (which I suggest). You can drag and drop the order of the pages from the menu manager. Click on "Appearance => Menus", and add a custom menu to your theme.

2 - If you are not using custom menu's then your pages have an "Order" associated with them where 0 is the first, 1, 2, 3, 4 etc.. Order your pages based on this and that will set your menu up just the way you want it.

Let me know if this helps or if you would like some more help!

Hi Carson

Just wanted to know what website do you recommend for using Adsense, is there a free WP theme or is it better to use a paid site
Reply
Carson Premium
Adsense can be used on all WordPress websites so it's really up to you on the website THEME you choose. There are adsense plugins that you can install on your website to help position the ads, or you can just add the adsense code to an HTML widget in your side menu. My suggestion is to choose a website with a Right hand side menu area, as well as a menu at the top. The Right Hand side menu area is great for adding lists of your pages, blog posts, categories, and Adsense!
Reply
dosh dosh dot com has some free adsense sites that are easy enough to work with. You have to make sure that you switch out the adsense code though because if you don't than the site creator will get the clicks from the ones that are in their.

Pretty simple though. If you need a guide just let me know I'll attach it to an email and send it to you. You should be able to find plenty of instruction there though.

Hope this helps.

Step 2, reading settings.....My general site settings do not show what you have, I do not have static page, front page select or posts page select. What should I do?
Reply
Carson Premium
Hey Dorris, in your theme what shows up on the homepage by default? Is it your blogs or your "home" page? Look in your theme specific settings as I have a feeling they offer similar functionality to set your homepage there. All themes are different although should allow you to choose your static homepage, and your blog page.

I chose the "MAGAZINE BASIC" theme for my website. I did everything you explained on the tutorial. My pages do not show up on my main menu. It only takes me to the page when I click on it through the "Static Home Page" Does it depend on the theme I choose?
Reply
Carson Premium
Most themes will allow you to choose your static home page and blog page from the "Settings => Reading" menu. However if the theme overwrites this default behavior then you may have to set this in your theme settings. There should be an option within your theme's settings to choose this.

Hi Julio, you need to publish the pages before you can choose them in the drop down for the static homepage. Also, please make sure you created "Pages" and not "posts" because you need to set pages as your static homepage.

Hi! I just started here too. This may be wrong, but I hit "publish" on the right side of the page after I drafted it, then modified the privacy settings to "Visiblity:private" just in case anyone clicked on it it would not be publicly displayed yet. Then it displays in the drop down box where you can make the page "static", if needed.
Good luck, and hope to be seeing you on this journey :)

I have yet to come across a theme that didn't allow for a Static homepage, it's something that is build directly into Wordpress. Perhaps you could send me a private message with your website details so that I can log into your wordpress admin area and have a peek. You certainly should be able to choose a static homepage and not have your blog roll there by default. Visit my Space and click "Private Message".
