Background information
Stock Free Images has over 470,000 free images. It is owned by the paid site Dreamstime. Need to be careful if you want the free ones, that you are looking at the free ones and you are suddenly not taken to the paid site. The free photographs are not of the same quality.
Advantages
- Images are completely free.
- Some interesting and good quality photographs
Disadvantages
- Some of the photos involving people seem very staged and unnatural.
- Limited range in comparison to some other sites.
- Images are not categorised so this makes it more difficult to do effective searches.

I second that - great training resource BIS. A new player in town that I've checked out is PhotoDune.net. They have a nice collection of stock images which I haven't seen replicated across other marketplaces.

I also use Clipart.com for paid photos and normally find what ever I'm looking for, I like them because the price is pretty good compared to other stock photo sites and they offer subscriptions like you pointed out.
