FreeImages.co.uk has only 6,000 photos available but they are good quality images. There are 83 categories but that means in some areas there are a limited amount to choose from.

Advantages

  • Wide range of categories
  • Good quality pictures
  • Free photographs

Disadvantages

  • Small number of images available

I second that - great training resource BIS. A new player in town that I've checked out is PhotoDune.net. They have a nice collection of stock images which I haven't seen replicated across other marketplaces.

I also use Clipart.com for paid photos and normally find what ever I'm looking for, I like them because the price is pretty good compared to other stock photo sites and they offer subscriptions like you pointed out.
