Conclusions:
When we look at all this stuff, contrived situations and income and cost considerations, we can see that the decision to leave a day job is based on:
1. Loss of income if a day job is terminated.
2. Cost of maintaining a day job such as travel, cost of clothing, child care and social obligations, association dues, etc.
3. Price of leaving a profession such as losing associations and contacts and gaining a reputation of one who left the profession. The longer you are away, the harder it is to get back.
4. Freedom to take care of children at home and to work in your undies.
5. Decrease in stress generated in your day job with an increase in stress as you must depend on yourself to support your living style.
6. Loss of insurance or retirement benefits or long term job benefits.
Some say in this business, "Don't quit our day job.":
I say, "Quit your day job as soon as it makes sense to do so and not sooner."
