After you get your meta tag from google search console, you need to install a very specific plugin called "insert headers and footers". Once you see it, click install now. Next click "activate plugin". Once installed, go back to google where you got your meta tag, copy it, and then go back to the "insert headers and footers" plugin where you can then paste the meta tag into the "scripts in headers" box. Then click "save settings".

Hi there, thanks for this , that is really helpful - once you have inserted the meta tag and got recognised by google analytics, can you then delete this from your headers section? thanks

This was a pretty convoluted process just to verify ownership, but it worked for me. Thank you for writing this up.

Hello again labman, verifying thru google analytics does not always work. Believe me I found out the hard way.

It is much easier to use the Google Analytics option as Kyle outlines here.

I suppose that is true but me being the least techie person out there, I found a video that explained it really well. I was afraid of posting the video here due to intellectual property concerns.
