Now that I had figured out an added way to help my site rank better, I revised my category list as you can see below here:

I keep the Category list in my widget area not only to help my traffic narrow their searches on my site, but also to help me rank.

Using Those Awkward Keyword Phrases

The first thing I thought of after my experiment with the year, was that maybe now I could start to target some of those awkward keyword phrases that didn't make sense on their own. Now I keep track of the phrases that don't make sense and look for opportunities to use the parts of the phrases as categories.

This works especially well when you can also combine them with words out of your Domain name as well. Just like in my case where it pulls Wealthy Affiliate out of my URL and then success stories from my categories.

Example Of A Category I Added

I am always saying that everything happens for a reason and I have had many things happen during my WA career that have helped to prove that. Another one of those things happened with this whole experiment as I got to the part of the training about including WA videos into your site.

I did a keyword search for,"wealthy affiliate video" and came across the following results:

As you can see this is a nice little low hanging fruit. While it won't bring droves of traffic, it all adds up in the end. I created some posts and recently added the "Video" category to my list. Now without any particular post already targeting the phrase,"Wealthy Affiliate Video" I am already ranked on page 4 of Google:

I have had good success with doing it like I do. Both my sites rank from it, so I would not worry about using more than one.

Interesting. I've never even looked at categories. I don't even use posts.

I just use pages, and parent pages for anything I want to group, such as a brand name for a parent page and that brand's different models each have their own individual page.

I remember a long debate about this some months ago and the general consensus of opinion at that time was that there was little difference between pages and posts, so I stuck with pages. I've now reached 160 pages in so I ain't changing 'em all now.
