Locating profitable keyword(s) starts in your noggin. If you wanted to know something, how would you search for it on the Internet or what words you would type into the search field. This will give you a good starting point.

If I was promoting a hair loss product (and I am not at the present time) I could start with hair loss to get some ideas of how people are searching for hair loss products.

I like to use stuff that works for free, don't you? So when I research keyword(s) I use the Google External Tool and Google Search.

You can also use the new Keyword Research Tool here at WA. It actually does the job of both the above tools in one place! The Article Power Score is a great feature. Its just that G.E.T. and G.S. are the Horses I rode in on so I haven't abandoned them... yet.

So I start with the Google External Keyword Tool and hair loss

Here are my results:

Notice in the above that the choose columns to display is set at show all and the match type is set at phrase.

What I am looking for is a keyword(s) that has a search volume of 1,000 or more average volume that would fit my product. I copy the keywords one at a time and paste them into Google search to see the results. I am looking for results less than 50,000 but under 20,000 is ideal.

If you notice above the Advertiser Competition little green (blue?) rectangle bars, they don't actually mean anything in relation to this research. They are sponsored results for those using Google Adwords Pay-Per-Click platform. We are after Natural results with article marketing.

The estimated average CPC however does tip us off to what keywords are profitable. If people are bidding high for a keyword(s) you can bet it is profitable. If there is no green in the bar and CPC says .10 cents, I would worry that the keyword(s) would get only tire kickers and not buyers.

As I find keyword(s) I like the looks of, I copy and paste the results into a text document and after I have a few I sort them numerically by search results (competition) so I can pick out ones that will work for me. I also like to place the number of average monthly searches on the tail end for quick comparisons.

Here is what I would have so far:

The keyword(s) with the lest competition in this case are stress hair loss and stress and hair loss. And since these look like they would be easy keyword(s) to write about I am going to go with them. If they were otherwise then I would go down the list and pick something else, but remember, as you go down the list the competition gets higher.

Just a side note. Notice dog hair loss. Sometimes when you are searching for one thing you get an idea for a keyword(s) for another product. This with a little research could become a whole new profitable campaign. I make a note of it for later possibilities.

I would save this list because I would be working with it as long as my campaign is running. I call it my campaign document and keep it in a folder with anything else dealing with this hair loss product campaign. This folder would be named after the promotion and would be placed in a folder named Campaigns right next to my WA campaign folder. If this sounds childish, it probably is, but it works for me.

Being organized is very important if you are to get anything done with any consistency.
