Your hub-site is Health & Fitness; a fairly broad niche and popular in its appeal. Yet think of the keyword areas within that broad topic area. By creating spoke sites, you can focus on these keyword areas without compromising the general appeal of your main site: i.e. weight loss, skin care, hair loss, exercise, or vitamin supplements. That is only five spokes; we could add five more and it would not be unreasonable.
Your keyword then would be Health and/or Fitness... and your domain hopefully will carry those keywords because this is the hub-site of your niche. If that is your passion, you must feel lucky today to be able to use it as your niche with worrying about competition.
A hub say onSports, that links out to a pharmaceutical affiliate... could easily get penalized by Google because it is not relevant. But if you link out to your spoke sites that cover related niches, your link pattern will be absolutely acceptable. Therefore, we would link out to golf, baseball, soccer, football, polo, and more.
The only change you will have to make is in your thinking of a niche to base your new home business on... choose one that has a variety of sub-keywords. Sure you could choose one of the lesser Home & Garden keywords like Beautiful Roses by Sandy, and set up your home business website on it. But today we can set up our hub asHome & Garden itself, and decide on the spokes that will all be relevant and fully monetized.
I am familiar with the "Hub and Spoke" system, and if done correctly it could work very well.
One small tip though... Make sure your sub-domains (at the end of each spoke) are inter-connected with links to each other, and that each sub-domain is also linked back to your main domain (the Hub)
Hope it makes sense to you.
