Image Window

To create a new image, go to File > New and select the template size or custom size image using the height and width parameters.

You will see the following menu for creating a new image:

Once you have made your selection, you will get an empty workstation:

If you have a digital photograph that you will be working with, you can go to File > Open and navigate to the photograph you want to begin working on. I selected my cat Midnight and you can see how the image window now has Midnight where before it was blank.

Look closely at the information along the top of the image window:

It tells me the filename which is Midnight (my cat's name). It tells me that I imported it as opposed to creating the image within GIMP. I also know that this is one layer. And it gives me the size of the image too as well as RGB (red, green, blue) . I am not sure what the 4.0 is all about.

Love Gimp!! I discovered GIMP when I discovered Open Office. Great open source products for those who would rather not user Microsoft! Great tutorial!

Hi Tim:

This tutorial is only an introduction to GIMP - it is not a complete cover everything there to learn about GIMP. I plan on doing multiple separate tutorials on GIMP, but this tutorial scratches the surface. It took me a while to sit down with it and start to learn it.
