Open a KDP Account

KDP is Amazon's platform for authors to publish their books. KDP stands for Kindle Direct Publishing, but don't be misled. You can use KDP to publish your book on the Kindle platform, as a paperback and as a hardback.

What Does It Cost?

KDP is totally free to join. The only money you pay are the royalties when you sell a copy of your book and these are deducted from the sale price.

But What About Paperbacks and Hardbacks?

It's hard to believe that there are no upfront costs for the paperback and hardback versions of your book, but it's true. It's because Amazon, unlike a traditional publisher, doesn't print in advance or hold stock.

Instead, it uses POD (Print on Demand). When a customer orders your paperback, only then is it printed and shipped to the customer. Amazon has POD facilities all over the world, ensuring fast fulfillment. These are also used for creating and shipping author copies.

How to Open a KDP Account

Opening a KDP is free and a lot simpler than many other platforms.

Go to https://kdp.amazon.com.

If you have an existing Amazon account, click the Sign In button and then sign in; if you don’t have an Amazon account, click the Sign Up button and then follow the steps to create one.

Read and accept the KDP terms of service (TOS) that open onscreen.

You should see the KDP Bookshelf, where all your published books will be listed.

In the upper-right corner of the screen, you will see a warning that your account information is incomplete. Click the Update Now link.

Complete the form for your account.

You are now ready to publish your first book!

Phil, I started a KDP Account a few days ago and published my first e-book. Today I published 3 more. Your training walked me right through it. But I am still lost. I have a couple of more papers I have written and want to publish them also. But I have run into a slight snag right now with one of them and I am going to send you a PM. it is currently 2124 Monday night here in Rogers, Arkansaw.

Timely training for me, Phil. My first book is in "production", and even if it is a long term project of mine (not at the top of my priority at the moment), this training come in very handy. It fits very well into the long term plans of rebooting my business and my new niche website.

I will be following the next parts of the series with eyes wide open :-)

Great training for getting started on publishing books on Amazon, Phil! This has been an idea of mine to do for awhile now, although I did work with a couple others in the past, I didn't have much to do with the actual setting up all this on Amazon. So, this will help a lot once I get going on it as I'm still trying to decide on what type of book to do, lol.

Thanks for sharing!
Best wishes :) ~Sherry

My pleasure, Sherry. Part 2 of the training will include picking a genre on the basis of making money from it and getting the actual book ghostwritten.

Thanks so much for this great information. My niche is on gardening for the beginner. Can I just incorporate the information from my articles on my website into a book. I see how I can create a series from the different menus that I have. Do you think that's a good idea or is it being redundant.

No, it's a great idea. I single source as much as possible. You automatically own the copyright to all original material you produce so can do what you like with it.

Thanks for the reply. I was hoping you would say that. Why reinvent the wheel?
