- EWWW Image Optimizer
If you are on a tight budget and don’t want to manually optimize images, this plugin might be worth looking into. EWWW Image Optimizer can be used to optimize uploaded images for free. However, it only does lossless compression. Premium subscriptions are required if you wish to perform lossy compression.
- TinyPNG
TinyPNG allows you to instantly optimize your images by dragging up to twenty smaller images directly into your browser. It is also able to optimize JPEG files. TinyPNG gives you 500 image optimizations per month for free. After that, you will have to pay $0.002-0.009 per file.
What Are Alt Attributes, Title Attributes, and Image Title attributes?
They are also known as alt tag, alt text, and title tag. Technically, they are not tags. They are attributes.
The alt text describes the content of the image and its function on the page.
WordPress Title and Alt attributes
You can add a title or alt attribute to an image uploaded to WordPress. It defaults to using the filename of the image in the title attribute. It is important to spend the time to create an alt text for each image that you add to a blog post.
Alt text and SEO
Google's policy on images contains a heading titled "Use descriptive alt texts". It's not a coincidence that Google gives alt text a high value. It is used to not only determine the content of the image but also to show how it is related to the surrounding text.
I also prefer to save my images to certain sizes. I read the other day the best image size for featured images is 1600 x 900 to make it better shareable on social media platforms. What is your take on this?
I know my content size is 1200 wide without sidebars and 620 with a sidebar (considering padding). I, therefore, resize my images inside posts to 650 wide using an online tool called BeFunky. I like it because it's ad-free. I only use the crop and resize feature. You can also select the quality % to decrease the file size. Am I following the correct approach here?
Thanks again for great training.
Excellent post, thank you.
I've just changed all my images to WebP (WebP doesn't work for GIFs).
Having previously optimised JPG and PNG with Kraken, the new images vary between 50% and 75% of the original size. The exercise has added an additional 10 points or so to my mobile load speed (from about 70 to 80 something for each post.
