I am pretty sure that most of you want to know how to improve website ranking for your websites. In this training I will tell you what has worked for me. This will be Part 1 of a series about different ways to improve your rankings in Google. Even in the first two sentences, I did something that will enhance the SEO of this training. Do you see what I did? Look closely, I’ll wait…

If you haven’t figured it out, here is the answer. The keyword for this training is “how to improve website ranking” and it appears as the Title for this training and it appears within the first 140 character spaces of my content. You should know that it needs to be in the title but why the first 140 character spaces? For the possible Meta description.

META DESCRIPTION

The Meta description is important for two reasons. 1) Its main purpose is to compel a higher CTR or Click Through Rate, which is how often someone is willing to click on your link. Yes the title is very important in getting the reader’s attention, but it is the Meta description that will seal the deal.

2) The other important reason for the Meta description is to help increase SEO. We are all taught to place our keyword in the title and in the first paragraph, right? Well if you place it early enough in the first paragraph there is a good chance it will appear in the Meta description too.

But why the first 140 character spaces? Though the Meta description should be between 155 – 160 character spaces, I want my keyword to appear within 140 because when a website has been live for 2 months and less, there will always be a 15 character date displayed prior to the description. So do the math, 155 - 15 = 140.

By placing my keyword as early as possible in the first paragraph I insure that it will appear in the Meta description, should that be the description that Google displays based on the query entered for the search term. When using the All in One SEO plugin, your Meta description is auto-generated from the first 160 character spaces of your content.

FREE KEYWORDS

I have done a TON of Keyword Research over the past 2 years in the niches of Internet Marketing & Make Money from Home, perfect for those in the Affiliate Boot Camp. On this page and all pages to follow, I will list some of the few hundred keywords I have saved. They will all contain the current search and competition values and will mostly be “Low Hanging Fruit” keywords. Perhaps you could use them for your websites.

Boomer this is great!! I have a couple of sites online that I launched prior to joining WA but I did not know to do what you have explained. Your training has caused me to think of how the CUSTOMER searches for information, services and products and not to rely solely on my own opinion! You hit this training out of the park!!!!!!

Hey Rob

This is excellent. I am at the stage in the WA training where I am supposed to sign up to a couple of affiliate programs.

I have hesitated to do that because at this stage I feel that my blog is missing a lot. For example I haven't done any reviews yet etc. Also, I have kept changing my mind about my content and kind of got away from the goal of helping people.

I started out with this in mind because that's the kind of person I am. I got carried away with the money side, but this article has me back on track again. Now I'm sure of what I need to do.

Am I wrong to to hold off signing up with affiliates if I feel that I need to get to a point with my content that satisfies me?

Thanks

Luthor

If you do not feel ready then do not join up. Besides affiliate programs will need to review your website before they accept you as their affiliate. So if you do not have enough content they may deny you. Sign up when you feel ready to.

Hi Robert,

Could you explain more in different for Meta description and Meta Keyword Tag (Which you recommend do not use). As I am confusing between this both.

What you means DO NOT use meta keyword tag means avoid stuffing the keyword into meta description. ?

Correct me if I am wrong.

Thank you
Maxx

Hi Maxx,

Let me try to help you out.

Both meta description and meta keywords are examples of what's called meta data. These 2 metadata are what's coded into your web page (maybe by your SEO plugin), and not really something your visitors see (unless maybe the search engine shows them or your meta description is part of your content).

A meta description is a short, 140-150-word summary of what your page is about, and includes your keyword.

So, for example, a meta description of this page might be, "An expert reveals how to improve website ranking in 4 easy steps. By implementing these steps, your site's ranking will improve."

It's been a while since I've built a site, but if my recollection is correct, a lot of good SEO plugins should have a field where you fill in the meta description. Using the example I mentioned, you type a 140-150-word description of what your page is about, and try to include the keyword(s) you want to rank for.

As you know, meta description and meta keywords are different.

Meta keywords are not really used by the search engines anymore. Years ago, they were. But, because some webmasters abused the use of meta keywords, the search engines don't use them as a ranking factor, for the very reason you mentioned: keyword stuffing.

Hope this helps.

PS: Notice, in my example, I also mentioned, "...site's ranking will improve."

Though that phrase is not the exact keyword phrase, "improve website ranking," It does contain 2 words that are in that phrase, and I think that variation does help make your site more appealing to searchers.

Hi Robert,

I really enjoyed your tutorial, but remain confused about which one of the following would be the best set of keywords to use?

how to improve seo for a website – 128 / 0

jobs you can work at home – 327 / 67

what is website content – 684 / 97

The first has low searches and 0 competition. The last has a lot more searches but still the QSR is below 300 like the others, so wouldn't that be the one to go with?

Thanks Dave

Those are all great keywords. I would use all three. If I had to pick one of the 3 as the target keyword I would choose the middle keyword jobs you can work at home – 327 / 67 because 67 is better than 97 and 327 is better than 128.

Does including the keyword in the H1 header count as using it during the first 140 characters, or does it have to be in a paragraph? I tend to do the former, with my opening article paragraph leading up to the keyword in the last sentence, like I was taught to write in college. Do I need to change my writing style?

Normally the H1 and H2 headers correspond to your page or post title.

Now if you are actually adding an H1 header tag prior to your very first paragraph, then it would count it as part of the first 140 characters.

However the majority of websites do not use that style of format simply because it is too much of a BOLD look for the very first thing a person reads.

Example, with my content the page and post title appears as an H1 tag at the top of the page. This will not be considered as part of the first 140 characters.

In the attached screen shot my keyword is "Star Trek items for sale" and I place it within my first paragraph in the first sentence. Being that it is in the page title and then again in the first sentence, I do not need to repeat it again.

It is as simple as that. Google does not need to see it anymore than that to know that is what my content is about.

Now if you were to take an H1, H2, or H3 header (like the size I use), and place it before the first paragraph with your keyword, then it would be counted as part of the first 140 character spaces. But like I said, most people do not start there content with a heading tag.
