So ... Let's see how can you add a PayPal donation button manually (without using a plugin) ...

Log in to your PayPal account, and click the "Manage Buttons" link:

Next, you'll have to click the "Create new button" link to create a new common button:

You'll be taken to the button creation page where you need to choose "Donations" under the button type:

Next, you'll have to complete a 4-step process in order to

  • select the country and the language
  • choose a button style
  • define a purpose (optional)
  • define the currency and the amount
  • customize additional options

Once you have completed all the steps, you'll have to click the "Finish and Get Code" button:

On the next screen you'll be able to see the generated button HTML code. Click the "Copy to clipboard" link ...

... then open your post/page in the editor, switch to Text mode (nor Visual!) and simply paste the button code in the exact place where you want to add the PayPal donate button:

Once you have published your post/page, you can visit your site to see the live result. In my case it looks like this:

And that's all ... You have successfully created a PayPal donation button by manually adding the HTML code to your Wordpress website. More than that, you can easily insert the same HTML code into a regular text widget in order to manually add the donation button to your sidebar area.

Cool, isn't it?

And that's it my friends!

Would it be wise to create a paypal donate hutton for a cause that is not related to your website? For example a shelter, spay/neuter clinics?

Well, that should be your choice Christine :)

Personally, I wouldn't put anything on my site that isn't related to my niche.

Thank you once again Zsoit for another helpful and very useful post.

I have a question????

I noticed that there was a section on PayPal where it asked how much.

Any suggestion as to what amount is reasonable to add there?

Many thanks

There is no golden rule here Jennifer ... It depends on many factors ... The purpose, the target audience, etc ...

Yes I get that but do you not have to put something in that section or can you leave it blank and leave it up to the person making the donation.

If you do have to complete that section I just wanted an idea say what is the minimum to ask for ?

PayPal will give you 3 options:

Any amount
An exact amount
Set 3 amount options, plus any amount

So if you are unsure, you can choose any amount or set 3 amounts plus any amount.

Brilliant

That takes the thinking of an amount out of the process.

Many thanks

PayPal will charge some kind of fee, I know the charge me on the business account pennies on the dollars.

So, you may want to make sure you set a donation of $5 to help offset the fees.
