Here we are going to elaborate the different roles within the administration of a Wordpress site.
- Administrator
This is the highest level of user within a Wordpress site. An administrator has all access over the site and is capable of doing anything on the site which include add or remove users, create, edit, remove post, pages, upload files, setting theme and export and import of files from and to the site.
In case you need someone else to have a full control of the site as you do, you can create the person as the second Administrator.
An appointed Administrator is not able to transfer the site if he is not the owner of the domain. - Editor
An Editor can create, edit, publish and delete his own posts as well as other user's posts. He can also moderate comments on the site, manage categories, tags and links. In addition, he can upload files and images onto the site. - Author
An Author has almost similar roles of Editor. However, he can only create, edit or delete posts of his own and not other users. - Contributor
A Contributor can create, edit his own posts but he cannot publish them. Once he has created a post, he needs to notify the administrator who will review the post before publish it. Once the post is published, a contributor has no access to the post anymore.
A contributor has no capability to upload files and image to the site. - SEO Manager and SEO Editor
If you got Yoast SEO plugin installed on your site, you will see there are other options. i.e. SEO Manager and SEO Editor. Otherwise, you don't have this option. Basically this roles are related to SEO management of your site.
So, in case you hire someone to manage the SEO aspects of your site, you want to assign either of these roles.
In case you need to change a user's role, you can do that by simply go to the 'user' tab and > 'all users' page, choose the user you want to change by ticking the box next to the username and choose the new role from the drop down option. And click 'change'.
Here, you can also do 'Bulk Edit' by choosing more than one users to be edited. All you need to do is choose (by ticking) the users, click the 'Bulk Action' and choose the action you want to perform (edit or delete). If you choose to edit, you may proceed to change (edit) the roles from the drop down. And click 'Change'
In the next lesson, we are going to learn how to delete a user from your Wordpress site.
