I like to start my searches with Google and after finding keyword phrases people are searching for on Google go to Keyword tools to find out whether my phrases are high ranking keyword phrases.

Today I want to use Google search engine and WA keyword tool to find a good ranking keyword/phrase.

Say, I am interested in Gardening, and I want to find a high ranking keyword in the area of gardening.I know “gardening” is too broad a word so, without wasting time I know that I need a subset of Gardening to start my search.Alphabet soup technique is a good tool for finding phrases.

So if I use the keyword tool and it comes back with a listing for one that shows a search of say 1000+ , Article Power of 8.1, and PPC of 7.5 and another that shows a search of <10, AP of 10, and PPC of 9.6 which is better?
Reply
steveo5770 Premium
Don't even worry about Article Power or PPC. You want more than 50 monthly searches and less than 300 competition:)
Reply
terenzia Premium
A search with <10 is no good. It means it is not a good niche in fact not a niche at all. Under 10 people searched using that keyword in the whole month.

I see what you are saying, however you are putting this, Google is bringing up relevant pages with the keyword "diet plans" by the tens of thousands. Look for yourself. The KW "diet plans" is in the title and in the body and is incredibly relevant, no matter how deep you go! When you go to the 30th page and the title says "best diet plans" and then in the body..." here are the diets plans"...you are telling me that this is irrelevant? So, if I type "diet plans" and Google on the 30th page has "best diet plans"... this is considered irrelevant? Wow, I really must be missing something. Again if you look at my search results (below) or do this yourself, you will see that the info provided by WA keyword is solar systems off from the supposedly "irrelevant" Google search. This is important for me. I just don't understand how this could be perceived as irrelevant.. Please help. I am really hung up here and it's destroying my confidence in trusting WA or Jaaxy

I believe that the keyword tool is showing those sites that have the word diet plan in the actual url, not just within the body.

There's a lot more to ranking than just how much competition a keyword has. In your example, searching for diet plans lists a site on page 1 that has the keyword "eating plan." There's nowhere on the page where they use the word diet plan, yet it gets a page 1 listing for the search. That site would not be included in the keyword tool search.

All I can suggest is just use the keyword tools as a guide to traffic and possible competition. Try to find some keywords that are longer and narrow down the competition. At the end of the day it comes down to the quality of the site and the content.

Please Terenzia - I am only just learning myself, but our training teaches us that Jaaxy/keyword tool shows the true competition, Google will show all relevant competition even for keywords within your keywords, i.e. "gardening with", "gardening as", "gardening is", "garden". etc. etc. Jaaxy/keyword tool shows true competition which is what we need. Go search for your keyword within Jaaxy/keyword tool and that will give you true competition. So Google may show you 2.5 million searches, but your competition is a hell of a lot less for your exact keyword. Please someone tell me if I am wrong?
Reply
MmmmBalf Premium
Berny you are exactly right. :)

The competition are sites that target the keyword phrase. That is they have it as a keyword or heading on the site. If you just type the same phrase into Google it pulls up every site that has any single word of what you've searched for anywhere within the entire text on the site.

To use a specific example, a phrase at random (and nothing to do with my niche) "eco friendly building material". Jaaxy or the keyword tool will tell you this has a competition of 317 sites. Type that phrase into Google you get 6.7 million hits. What has google given you? Every single site that has the word friendly. Every single site that has the word building. Every single site that has the word material. Anywhere on the site.

Your competition are sites that use that exact phrase as a keyword, not just random words within the text that could be related to any number of things.

I understand your explanations. The problem I am having with WA keyword tool is this. I put in diet plans In WA KW tool, click competition and this shows me: Page 4 of about 373 results (0.42 seconds) in quotation marks. Now, I manually go to Google and put in "diet plans".
Guess what? I get About 2,750,000 results (0.17 seconds). When I go to the bottom of the first page, I then start to go page after page and it goes on forever...far greater than what WA KW is showing. I mean I keep going and I am at: Previous

27
28
29
30
31
32
33
34
Next
It just keeps on going and diet plans is in every single one of these sites ad infinitum. How is WA KW tool accurate? What am I missing?
Reply
caylynn Premium
Hello acopeland, Just want to say that Page 4 of 373 is a smaller pool to reach than on page 34 and next of say 1,700,000. The keyword tool is useful to find the lower hanging fruity keywords or the smaller demographic pool to reach. Jaaxy will help your search go quicker with the long tail phrase that will target the group you are very likely to reach. Hope this helps. ^_~

Hi Terenzia, At WA Certification Courses in Lesson 4 of Level 2 says Create a New "Keyword Rich" Post advising to use Jaaxy to find the best keyword ,,related to your NICHE. I just bought it , it cost you $ 19, for a month but it is definitely worth it. It helps you to get to the first pages in SEO. Lots of lots of keywords to no competition/competing in Google

Thanks for clearing the stuff, still a little confused about ppc power as what does the figure 7 or 8 or 9 indicates?

Have you tried asking your question in the Live Chat on the Activity Dashboard, you may find someone online who will be able to answer your question if you haven't yet got a reply.

So does that mean high PPC power like 9 is good as long as article power is close to that as well?
