404 - Adding the Graphic

Step 2: Upload your Cool Graphic to Your WordPress Website and get the link!

Upload the graphic image to your website as you would any other image. Just do it straight from your Media options as such:

After it's uploaded, click the link that will appear on the right:

Then, you be presented with the edit image screen. No... you don't actually need to edit it. Stop that!

Hey, come here! ;-)

In the upper right hand area, you'll see the actual URL (web address) of the image location as you'll see below.....

Step 3: Copy the URL of the image

The box won't reveal the entire URL. So, ensure you have it all.

COPY the URL to your Text Editor for the next step!

It should appear like this:

http://pureresiduals.com/wp-content/uploads/oops4043.jpg

Your file extension may be something other than jpg, but as I mention in previous training jpg files load faster.

Okay, now you have all the components, let's bounce back to the 404 error page within the Editor.

You're nearly there!

Thanks for sharing Peej. If we're not aware yet of the presence of broken link in our site, is there anyway to check it all or we got to check all the link manually?

Do I just do this within the code for the theme itself, or should this be set up within a child theme?

Code changes to a theme's files should be done through a child theme. Otherwise, any manual changes that you make will be overwritten whenever the theme is updated. Because of this, you'll need to reenter the changes every time the theme gets updated.

Since a child theme works by overriding the coding in its parent theme, theme updates don't affect those overrides. (Updates only change the parent theme's files; there won't be any updating done to your child theme files.)

Good post PJ. 404 pages can also be used to send a visitor back to a landing or squeeze page by adding the respective link. Cheers Ken.
