One of the most encouraging end results of hours spent developing our websites is to discover products and affiliates that will marry up with our website message. It is important for us to recognize that an affiliate company is seeking blogs that ensure their business relationship with us will not compromise their compliance with the FTC rules.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) of the United States does enforce their laws. Indeed there are many cases on their dockets, over 2,500 consumer fraud actions. Three that caught my eye were Lifelok, Family Dollar, and here in this snippet you see Dish Network has been found to not be in compliance.

So....it DOESN'T work to be ignorant of the law!

We are accomplishing allot from our WA lessons. And it is exciting to bring a website up from our creative energy and into the light of day when we publish it. And if we are to make money from our sites, we need to find our affiliates, those that have products and services that align with the 'mission of our message'. When traffic is coming to our site we want them to find our suggestions and hope they click to purchase them from the embedded affiliate links, right?

Consider that if our site is still very new or hasn't as yet been drawing much traffic it can be hard to get approved by an affiliate we are interested in. Making sure you have an Affiliate Disclosure that meets the FTC requirements will be one less thing that prevents you from getting a coveted affiliate relationship.

My link is in my sidebar, but on the bottom. Wonder if I need to move it to the top, or at least closer to the top.

Hey Chris,

I think that in the side-bar is a good idea because it will go along with the items you may be recommending to folks. The key is to make sure it is 'clear and conspicuous'. My gut is saying I'd rather it be closer to the top than buried if you will in the flow of your side-bar widgets.

Does this help?

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Maybe right under my subscribe and search fields.

Hi Linda,

Thank you for this important tutorial. I have not got an affiliate disclosure on my sites, so I am now worried. Is there a template that I can use to create one?

Lis.

Loes created this tutorial that has some language that can be a cut and paste. I recommend reading it with an eye to make sure it fits what you are doing on your site.

Hope this helps.

Thank you, Brian, for taking a look. Guess I should have found a catchy title for this cause it hasn't captured much interest. I wrote the training because I felt it would be a good resource for folks who are trying so hard but may not have gotten it right.

Ah well, lesson learned.

I appreciate your feedback!

Linda
