Do you hate pop-ups? Most people say they do. In fact, a study back in 2016 showed that 50% of participants found them annoying. So the answer to the question: Do pop-ups work? At a first glance may seem obvious… of course they don’t.
But the fact is that pop-ups have a high conversion rate. Hmm… let’s think a bit about this. People hate them but they convert well? Well, yes.
Let me explain. When you place pop-ups the wrong way, people will hate them. But when you carefully study where and when they will pop up, and place them in that exact spot… then, people will still hate them, hahahaha. Just kidding! Pop-ups make a huge difference when they pop up just at the right time. Visitors will even appreciate the pop-up!

Thanks for the training, Henry.
I've been looking at Boxzilla for a pop-up requesting email list info. This confirms my suspicion that they work IF used well. You make good points about timing, and it's also easy for us to forget the UX.
I tend to think using Google Analytics to determine avg time on site might be a good place to know when to put pop-ups in. Is this your experience?

I agree with you I hate pop-ups that show up within seconds or even 30 seconds of landing on a website. Unless I am super interested int he content, I will 99% of the time leave a website that has shown me a pop up in too short a timeframe.
I am ok with the pop up that shows up after a long time and or when I am going to exit anyway, it does not matter that that point.
Thanks
