3. Pop-ups must be captivating.

Nowadays, people on the internet have a very short attention span. You’ve probably heard of Microsoft’s study concerning human’s attention span. This study concluded that it had dropped from 12 seconds in 2002 to just 8 seconds in 2013. After this study, plenty of jokes were made about our attention span, saying it’s a second shorter than a goldfish.

So, taking into account the first two points already mentioned, once you target your visitor’s full attention, captivate him!

These 4 seconds the pop-up is in front of our visitor are valuable. Due to the small attention span, you must view this ability of getting your call to action across to your reader as the peak in your interactions with him. All the rest was just preparation to get our visitor to this point, to get him make this decision. Try to make the most out of these seconds. Please, pleaseee don't waste your pop-up with dull sentences.

    Wrapping up:

You have this tremendous tool! Once you have a reader on your site, you can have their full attention driven to your call to action! Hey, that’s powerful!

So please, use this tremendous tool called: pop-up, welcome gate, slide-in, whatever you want to call it… wisely!

    Thanks for the training, Henry.

I've been looking at Boxzilla for a pop-up requesting email list info. This confirms my suspicion that they work IF used well. You make good points about timing, and it's also easy for us to forget the UX.

I tend to think using Google Analytics to determine avg time on site might be a good place to know when to put pop-ups in. Is this your experience?

    Hi Howard,

Thank you very much for stopping by and for your comment.

Checking average time on site could be a good strategy. I have not done it that way myself, but it's worth trying. We discover things that work by testing, testing, testing.

All the best with your sites!

    Thanks, Henry!

For now, I'm using a Mailchimp pop-up upon exit for first-time visitors.

That's the best way to start using pop-ups, upon exit. Good!

This is great information, and you're absolutely correct. I will exit a website if I get a pop-up before I can even get any information. I'm just starting to monetize my website, so this training comes at a great time for me. Thanks!

Hi! Hey, cool, I wish you the best! Starting to monetize your website is a very exciting period!

After spending weeks/months creating content, one expects some return (although that's not the primary goal). So I wish you lot's of success at this stage. And be sure to capture visitors emails smoothly. Never popping up 3 seconds after somebody has landed on your site, LOL!

    All the best!

I agree with you I hate pop-ups that show up within seconds or even 30 seconds of landing on a website. Unless I am super interested int he content, I will 99% of the time leave a website that has shown me a pop up in too short a timeframe.
I am ok with the pop up that shows up after a long time and or when I am going to exit anyway, it does not matter that that point.

    Thanks

Hi! Yes, you're right. It seems to me that these basic tips are not being mentioned very often because I have seen this repeatedly this year: I land on a site and immediately, bang, a pop-up.

I wish this helps many improve their UX and increase their conversions.

    Keep well. All the best!
