What is a cookie?

A cookie is a small file stored on your device.

Most websites use first or third-party tools that store small files (cookies) on your device.

A technical cookie is used to allow a site to run properly .
A statistics cookie is used to generate navigation usage reports .
A profiling cookie is used to give suitable advertising for services or products .

Best is to use technical cookies, and to give a choice whether or not to enable statistical and profiling cookies.

When browsing the web, you will encounter various messages on websites.

  • A simple message looks like this:

You can accept or reject cookies and read more about the cookies used on this website

  • A more sophisticated message looks like this:

You can accept cookies or make your own cookie settings. In doing so, next message unfolds:

Here you can set your own choice.

Have had the Cookie Notice and the WP GDPR Compliance plugins in place for more than one year, yet Cookie Bot keeps telling me my website is non-compliant.
Not sure what I should think of it...

They have a free setup... did you try it?

Meaning once all is set, they give you a script that you can add in the header setting of your all in one seo plugin...

For priced plugins look here: https://www.formget.com/wordpress-gdpr-plugins/

PS
Make sure in your actual cookie settings to flag the no option

I didn't.
Honestly I thought they were going to tell me I was 100% compliant. And I flagged the same options as you did, so I really don't know what to think.
I will try their free setup and see what happens...

Update: I fail the audit with both plugins, plus I read the report and - despite it looking like Greek to me - both the GDPR and where data are sent to are marked with "adequate".

But let's see in detail why Cookie Bot thinks my website is non-compliant:

1) Prior consent on other than strictly necessary cookies (ePR)

ePR stands for EU Privacy Regulation, but I am not sure what I am supposed to do to fix it. Further, according to the official website, the ePR has not taken effect yet, so I am puzzled (to say the least). Source: https://www.itgovernance.co.uk/eprivacy-regulation-epr

2) Prior consent on personal data (GDPR)

Now I am really baffled, instead.

The following is stated in my Data Access Request page:

"You can request your data stored in our WordPress database (comments, forms etc.). by filling in your email address.
Data found will be sent to your email address and allows you to
put in an additional request to have the data anonymized.
By using this form (there's a checkbox to tick) you agree with the storage and handling of your data by this website."

I followed several tutorials on how to properly configure the GDPR plugin and reading that a prior consent on personal data is missing really puts me off.

The truth? I really don't know what to do... On one hand I am tempted to just forget about the whole thing and move on (in my opinion I am over compliant), on the other one I would really like to know where - according to Cookie Bot - I went wrong.
Any help appreciated and thanks in advance for your reply.

Ps. I tried their not-so-user-friendly free set up, but I have more than 100 subpages, so the free subscription would last no more than 30 days... I don't need it for a limited amount of time, I need it for good.

Hi, it is a burden indeed!
Yuk for all of us
Thank you for your awesome feedback

Just know that an audit often pushes to buy their stuff... and expensive most of the time

As for now'
Did you activate the no option in your actual plugin?
Did you add your cookie policy where people can ask to opt out?
And If you use opt in mail, your mailer needs to be compliant also..

Keep posting...
it helps us all

Thank you

If you keep doubting, ask site support to have a look at your site

I am still testing several solutions... and those twO cookies here are the most easy and simple for most us. Demanding sites will need another solution.

Just make sure to add the no option. That will also Blind some options.

Hence the choice Of Accepting different types of cookies in more sophisticated solutions... and most of us will flag off... To start with google adds...

"Just know that an audit often pushes to buy their stuff... and expensive most of the time"

That's the first thing I was going to say when I got their report, but I didn't want to sound like a hater.

In answer to your questions:

1) Yes, I did.
2) I think so, they can accept it, refuse it or check my privacy policy. In case this doesn't answer your question, please explain further.
3) Not using any opt in services at the moment.

This is what a new visitor sees when landing on my website (please see screenshot):

If you see something wrong, please let me know.

Out of curiosity, did you audit your websites?
Just dawned on me the reason for failing might be the social media sharing plugin that I'm using.

Yes...
All different
Not reliable

Best is to look at top websites in your niche and see what they do... in mine, most of them use the yes-no option and privacy or cookie policy link...

As for you, hard to tell. Normally there should be no interference with social media plugin. That would be a great question for site support...

So... that leaves us all to our own devices and questions... and a lot of chaos

Thanks for the training, basic as you say, but clear and concise. Just my kind of thing. No frills and easy to understand.
I am based in Asia, but there are many Europeans here and no doubt some will access my site from home when they return. Therefore I will do my research as you suggest and pick an appropriate cookie.

Chocolate chip oatmeal raisin would be my choice if they were sitting warm on a plate in front of me.

Good afternoon Fleeky,

Thank you for this training, it will be very helpful to a lot of people.
I have my cookie banner on the websites. I do not especially like the look of it but at least it is small.

Greetings from the south of Spain,

Thank you Taetske

If you use cookie notice it is easy to adapt the colors of the banner to your liking...
