Spot-checking your work is a good way to edit as you go along. There are quite a few writing styles out there with differing speeds, different flow and different textures. Nevertheless, when you stop for a reason, quickly look over the work and repair what is needed.

Spot-checking not only helps with grammar and spelling and punctuation. but with fundamental ideas as well. Those 'what on earth was I thinking?' ideas. You know. The ones that are better checked right now than in a half hour! Spot-checking also cuts down on the overall editing when you proof-read your blog near the end of the job. It may seem cumbersome but in time it will be a breeze and worth the small effort.

Maybe you are like me with huge fingers that sometimes hit multiple keys. Spot-checking needn't be this huge task to fold into your writing and many times it will cancel the editing all together. But you can't just type and publish.

Spot-checking is the fail safe primary method of editing that helps you discover all the little and pesky 'biffs' that we all make in writing. In the publishing business, the first grammar/punctuation/spelling mistake they find on your manuscript, it goes in the trash. It is not that brutal here. But I'm just guessing that good grammar will help your bounce rate!

I am also suggesting, for your writing in general, that you use a thesaurus. Find a new word to use that is different. A picture word. An engagement word. A story word. A thesaurus is a form of dictionary that, when used regularly, will also help your spelling, and in time your spot-checking will yield fewer results as your vocabulary grows. Just a small caution, though, to stay away from words that 'outclass' your document.

If you are half-way through a paragraph, and want to use the same word you already have in that paragraph, go to the thesaurus. Type in that word. Find similar words and use something different! This will, in time, expand everything. Grammar, spelling and punctuation.

You are a writer now. All writers use a thesaurus. And most writers spot-check. To them (this doesn't have to be you, but...) it is essential and besides, they are obsessed!

Tasks 0/2 completed
1. Periodically check your work (spot-checking).
2. Find and use three new words with your thesaurus.

Being British, I find it a constant irritation when I have to adjust spell - checkers to accommodate the bias towards so - called " American English " - which in itself can be regarded as a contradiction. I refuse to change my sixty plus years of English education merely to satisfy the whims of the internet. I therefore spell - check to English as it is used within the British Isles.
