You are not publishing a novel. But some of the same concepts do apply. In the area of editing, a really good piece of work can be ruined by the lack of it. And no one wants that. Really, you are putting your own self on the line every time you write a blog or page or post. Every thing you do reflects back on you. And ultimately reflects on the success of your site.

Spot-checking is good. But editing is essential. And, I don't think there is anyone on the planet that makes more writing mistakes than me! I need it as much as anyone. Heck, I am editing this page about 'editing' right now!

" " are used where there is a conversation. ' ' are used when there is an 'explosive' word in the sentence. , is for a pause in the thought. ! is for when the entire sentence is 'explosive'.There is a comedian somewhere that invented a thing where he (maybe she) puts the index and second finger up in the air on both hands and curls them to express something 'explosive' in the sentence. In very short order, everyone was using it because it was, well, kind of funny! Just not grammatical. When to use a hyphen. When to capitalize. When to use an apostrophe and when not to. School is a long way behind me and I am still re-learning things myself. Like when to use dot dot dot and not.

I am trying very hard to write a good training, but even I break the rules sometimes. I have this huge longing to use ... pretty much all the time. Sometimes it's proper. Sometimes not so much.

No one is seeking perfection in these matters. Only a return to good fundamentals leading to a cleaner script.

Many people do not know when it's proper to use an apostrophe ( ' ) For the most part it is replacing a letter. For example it's = it is. She's = she is. If you're not certain if it goes there, spell out both words. If you are writing in a colloquialism (okay...here's a perfect example. You want to use that word, but its spelling is elusive. What I just did was to play with it and rely on my memory until the red underline disappeared.), you might come up with "Hey, what's up?" You don't know if the apostrophe belongs there, but you can't use "Hey, what is up?" It wouldn't be quite right. Oh, and don'y forget i before e, except after c! (Basically).

I know there is a time element here. How concerned is Google with these matters? You are shooting for being top-ranked every time. Proper keyword, good content etc. If you do not have a clean script, in time it will come back to haunt you. People who, at first, thought that your content was unique and cool, over time may get tired of the grammar or lack of editing.

So...spot-checking as you go, and a thorough reading and editing at the end. Then, and only then, do you publish!

Tasks 0/3 completed
1. Go through and edit an existing page or post.
2. Multiply the number of mistakes X your total number of documents
3. If needed, edit all documents

Being British, I find it a constant irritation when I have to adjust spell - checkers to accommodate the bias towards so - called " American English " - which in itself can be regarded as a contradiction. I refuse to change my sixty plus years of English education merely to satisfy the whims of the internet. I therefore spell - check to English as it is used within the British Isles.
