Thank you for this training Lynne! Do you recommend adding hyphens to the titles and alt tags?
Reply
LynneHuy Premium
Hi Colleen

No - I only add the hyphens to the file names but not to titles and tags : )
Reply
ColleenF1 Premium
When you say, file names do you mean the name you give the photo, for example- Oceanside-Blvd-Beach.jpg. Thank you, I am really slow with all this computer stuff! Still learning ;-) I have been adding hyphens whenever I name the photo on my computer.
Reply
LynneHuy Premium
Yes that is right. I rename all images, videos and pdf's that I upload to my website or to Youtube as my keywords and I use hyphens in between the words.

Should I put a hyphen between the words for the keyword on Alt text or is that just for saving the photo in our folder on the computer?
Reply
@RICH. Premium
I wouldn't recommend putting a keyword in Alt-Text as it is now viewed as a spam signal by search engines and can damage your ability to rank.
Reply
LynneHuy Premium
Use hyphens when saving the files but not for Alt Tags :)
Reply
LynneHuy Premium
I hadn't heard that before, and I am still adding alt tags to all my images. I read through that link you gave...

However it never said not to include alt tags, it says not to keyword stuff - there is a huge difference between the two. Yes the image must be relevant to the content and of course the alt tag must be relevant to the content and the image... it does not say do not put keywords into alt tags :)

Keyword stuffing has never been a good idea anywhere, including image alt tags.
Reply
@RICH. Premium
It's a dated trick, goes back to the days of backlinks.

Alt-Text is used by screen readers for the visually impaired, the text needs to be a literal description of the image. Google is now penalising sites that put keywords in there.

I do dozens of site reviews every month, and each time I tell members to remove any keywords from Alt-Text, and when they do their ranking improves!

See MikeMahaffey's comment here for an example:

Lol and my rankings are great :) Thanks for you input Rich.
Reply
@RICH. Premium
LOL, you might do even better if you remove them!! :D

I think members forget to look at the HTML and see how adding an initial image with keyworded alt-text will actually appear to search engines.

Also, it's worth bearing in mind that adding the same keyword into multiple images in a single page or post will also end up keyword stuffing the content too!
Reply
Megan8 Premium
This is interesting. I agree about the keyword stuffing perhaps however would it not work using LSI keyword for each other photo so it's not the same?

I would think it would improve rankings so if a relevant image and unique LSI keyword for each image.

@RICH. Premium
If you wish to try testing something like this, of course, feel free and go ahead. However, I'd never recommend such things to a newcomer, because their priorities are usually different, they usually want to build a successful earning site as quickly as possible.

Google has long since had a downer on alt-text being misused since the launch of ChromeVox https://www.google.com/accessibility/for-developers.html#chrome

The purpose of alt-text is clearly defined by Google. It is to give a visually impaired visitor a literal description of what the image contains via a screenreader. It isn't provided as a means to try and 'trick' Google into giving you a better ranking, which is in effect what everyone who promotes this technique is recommending members try and do.

I've seen too many sites fail and even trashed because of such 'tricks', I was at WA when many members lost their earning sites to the Panda update. In the last year or so, I've lost count of the members who've stopped struggling to rank once they've removed keywords from alt-text in their images.

Of course members should feel free to experiment, but at their own risk and on an informed basis. :)
Reply
LynneHuy Premium
Yes I agree with that, that is why I said use different keywords in different images! Yes I might do better... but if my content is #1 on Google... well I can't do much better can I? My method works well for me and I am having massive success with rankings so for me I am not going to change the way I am doing things at this stage.

You say "but rather focus on writing a captivating headline that includes your Main Keyword." and in your example you show "Main Keyword - hacks you have to know".

Does this mean that the title can be anything as long as I have my main keyword in there somewhere and I will still get ranked for that main chosen keyword?

For example if i chose "learning to write" and then i wrote as my title "great ways for learning to write" then I'd still get ranked for just "learning to write"?

Or do I have to seperate added words with a hyphen? so "learning to write - amazing ways that will help"?

Hope you understand what I mean
Reply
LynneHuy Premium
Yes that is it exactly!
You can phrase it however you like, no need to worry about a hyphen. Try and start your sentence with your keyword if you can, the closer your keyword is to the beginning of the sentence the better,.

This is sweet and so eye opening. It honestly has taken me 2-3 weeks to come out with about a 3,000 word article but I feel if I try and implement what you have taught here then it will really help. I really don't want to be posting that irregularly but I have limited time I can do this each day.

This may seem like a silly question, but how would SEO know what my chosen keyword is if I don't use a hyphen? For example if i was to say "great benefits from avocados in a high potassium diet"
How would it know which one I chose, if it's "great benefits from avocados" or "high potassium diet" ?

Also, is it necessary to include the main keyword in another H2 heading, if it's in the first paragraph, url, SEO title and conclusion?

One more final question :) Do I have to put my other keywords in a H2 heading or can they just be scattered around the article as I write? -Or is that technique only for LSI keywords and not other main keywords I want to use?
Reply
LynneHuy Premium
I am so glad that this has helped you Megan. It will get easier to start creating content and to implement SEO easier, without thinking too much. Don't worry now about posting regularly or pushing yourself. Learn some new things all the time and implement them. Remember this is about having fun too!

What I do is first plan out my article and think about the different things I need to cover. I then come up with a keyword for each section. Each section would have a heading and an image.

Then I would also have some LSI keywords which I would include within the article. You will also naturally rank for loads of LSI keywords without even thinking about it.

Don't worry about how Google figures it all out, Google and the other search engines will figure it out and you don't need to put a hyphen in. You will put your keywords into your SEO plugin too and this will tell the search engines what your keywords are.

Having fun is so important, very true. :) I am very passionate about this and love to create content and designs and ideas.

I am wondering though about my other question regarding having my main keyword as a H2 heading if it's already in the url, first paragraph, conclusion and seo description and meta title. Do i need to include it in an H2 heading also?

Even if my article title is different?
Reply
LynneHuy Premium
Yes I would include your keyword in H2 heading too :)

Hi Lynne. I use this check list every time I post. Thanks.
BUT, I am still not clear on what you mean about the difference between headlines, titles, SEO headlines and urls.

Till now, I've been writing a Title (which becomes the url and permalink). And I write a super descriptive meta description that ends up under the title when it is indexed.

I don't understand where to put an extra title with a juicy headline?
Confused, but I think it's important for my SEO.

Hi Janelle

Ok so when you start writing your post there is the title right at the top? And the URL becomes the same as this title?

Ok so that title has zero SEO value. So I like to write that title only to capture the interest of readers so if they are on my website or if I share it on social media that is the title that usually shows right?

The I change my URL to be my main keyword.

Then right at the bottom of your post is where you add your SEO information, with the meta title, meta description and keywords?

Make this meta title your main keyword and try and make it really interesting too because this is what people will see when they search for you on Google, This must be optimized for SEO so people find you AND catchy so when people do find you they click.

Let me know if that makes sense?

Am I to understand to use H2 for title and for headings? Also, I thought All in one seo was automatic in respect to tags and categories.
Reply

Hi Cynthia

You can use some H1,H2, H3, H4 headings throughout your posts. You can't add headings to your title :)

Tags and categories you add manually, All In One SEO does not do that.

Let me know if that makes sense?

Very good training and it has made me realize that there is something I am not taking advantage of. That is tags and I need to do some training on exactly what they are and how best to use them.
Reply
LynneHuy Premium
It is simply another way of grouping and categorizing your posts.... but yes find some training on tags and start using them. I was surprised how well this helps my readers move around my website!

Sometimes I watch my real time analytics and I see how users move around my website just using tags!
Reply
Defiant6 Premium
Oh wow, I didn't realize it helps them to move around a website. I will definitely get into the training of how to use tags.
Reply
LynneHuy Premium
Neither did I. In fact when I first started working online and I asked the web developer that created my website he said not to worry about tags because they don't mean a thing!

Oh how I love being here at WA now. Yes there may be differences of opinion on things but when I ask a question I get loads of people responding and lots of different opinions. I can then see what I think is best. Before I struggled so much and when I got an answer from a professional I just went with that.

I can see how I have made so many mistakes in the past.

So yes, some people say tags are useless... but I am now of the opinion it adds SEO value AND it adds userability value which in turn adds more SEO value.

Thanks Lynne, but I am a bit confused now. I did just learn that the keyword does not need to be in the main title. But if you then add the keyword to the AIO SEO title section (and make the title different from the one that actually shows up on your post) it could be a boring title again. I thought that what you put in the AIO SEO sections is what would show up in the search.

I don't want my boring title that nobody will click on showing up in the searches.

I have really been struggling with this because all of my keywords are quite long (3-6 words), often questions. There is no way to write a catchy title that also has the keywords without it becoming a run on sentence.

Another thing, someone (can't remember who) said to only focus on one keyword per article. Don't get fixated on adding other keywords. But I think you are suggesting we should look at other keywords.

I am starting to think (since I am not really making much money) that I am going to just try writing without focusing on keywords. So many of my competitors articles that rank on the first page don't seem to even focus on keywords. They appear here and there, but it seems very natural and not planned out. Yet they are still on the first page.

What to do, what to do???
Reply
LynneHuy Premium
Yes what you write in the All in One SEo title is what will show up in search, that is correct. But remember it will take a bit of skill to learn how to write interesting titles... both for your blog title and your meta title.

None of this is a hard and fast rule. And yes I know exactly what you mean about long tail keywords, it can be hard to fit in nicely into a title. Then take a secondary keyword for the seo title.

Make sure what you do fits well, that is really important.

Don't concentrate on like 10 keywords for a post, that is just silly! I usually have my main keyword and then 2 secondary keywords. I put my main keyword in all the essential places and my secondary keywords in headings, alt images and maybe also in the text if I can.

I often get all 3 keywords ranking well which is awesome.

I totally understand what you are saying Tanja and it takes a long time to get into the habit of writing naturally and in a way that incorporates all these methods.

Anything that stops you from writing naturally leave out. If you know all these tips you can start adding some in at some stage...
Reply
TanjaRita Premium
Thanks Lynne. I think it was Jovo who said he noticed that sometimes what you put in the title and description of AIO SEO doesn't even show up in the search. In the end the search engines pick what they want to post, overriding your attempts at good SEO.

I spend all day yesterday fixing up titles (mainly on older posts) where I tried to get the main keyword in, but it was just so boring. So I took out the keyword and wrote a catchy title. I used the same title on the AIO SEO title section. Hopefully this wasn't a mistake.

I don't think I am going to change anything again. I will just work with this info going forward.

Just to confirm, the title that you have in the title section of your post, isn't always the same as the title you are manually entering into the AIO SEO title section?

You would think that since I have been at this for almost a year I would know what is going on. But there is so much conflicting info out there. I do what one person says, then another comes along and says "no, no, no...do it this way"....ugh. Maybe I should crawl back into my warm bed.
Reply
LynneHuy Premium
LOL Tanja.

You need to figure out what works best for you. Yes there is a lot of conflicting stuff out there for sure and that is what makes working online so hard at times.

Even the training here is written by different people... so there will be differences of opinion.

Don't spend too much time and energy doing things like fixing titles, it does get boring. Rather allocate a little bit of special time where you go to old content and update it.

Put the majority of your focus on new content and when you apply something you have learned and it works well for you, try it again and see what happens.

These are my personal methods that work well for me. Get your own book and try out new things, adding in things you learn from other people and make your own formula over time.
Reply
TanjaRita Premium
That is kind of what I have been doing. But then I always second guess myself. Especially since my traffic is nowhere near where I want it for almost a year in.

I think I have figured it all out, but then I see trainings and blogs and think, "uh oh, maybe I missed something".

But I will just keep at it.
