So just to recap…

If you are using the All in One SEO Pack plugin like the majority of WA members, you have your keyword within the 60 character spaces of your post / page title, and you have the beginning 140 character spaces of your content being descriptive and including your keyword, then you are good to go.

The All in One will automatically create your Meta Title and Meta Description Tags. But what if you want to change your Meta Title Tag? Perhaps you found a great keyword you want to add to a post titled Get Started. Well then the easiest thing to do is save the content as draft and retype your title including the keyword.

The same thing is true for your Meta Description Tag. If you want to change the description the All in One created for you from your content, then retype your description. For both instances just click inside the meta tag field and delete the text inside, then retype what you want the title and description to be.

After any changes make sure to click on Save if your post is saved as a draft or click on Update if your post is already published. But what does Google officially say about which meta tags matter and which one does not? In short Google says that the Description tag is important and NOT the keywords tag.

In the below video by Matt Cutts, he explains why the Meta Description Tag is important and why the Meta Keywords Tag should be totally ignored. Matt used to be the go-to guy between the public and the Search Quality Team on SEO at Google. He left Google in 2017 and now works for the U.S. Government.

The folloing YouTube URL is the Google video. I cannot post the link in this tutorial so make sure to copy and paste it into your browser to view and hear what Matt Cutts says about why you should ignore the Meta Keywords Tag.

Well I hope this tutorial has finally cleared up the reason why you no longer want to pay any attention to filling in the Meta Keywords Tag. It is totally useless and does nothing to increase your rankings. But the Meta Description Tag is very important to get people to click through to your post.

One of the important metrics of SEO is known as CTR (Click Through Rate) which is a measure of how many times people will click through to your content. It is your Meta Description that will determine how many click throughs you get. Obviously that is your ultimate goal, to get people to click on your post.

Robert, thank you for this great training.
I have a question. In AIO SEO, I put a few keywords, but can I use different keywords in every single post?

You are welcome. First off you should stop putting keywords into the AIO SEO Pack meta tags. It will not help with your rankings.

Secondly you definitely can and want to use different keywords for different posts. All you need is one target keyword per post.

If I didn't misunderstand, you meant I should keep AIO SEO Home Keywords area blank.

Is that correct?

I'm sorry. I thought you were talking about the keywords tag for each page and post. The Home Keywords tag in the AIO SEO Settings is recommended for putting about three keywords into it.

Google reversed its decision after increasing snippet length and reduced it back down to 160 characters, instead of 300 characters. Mobile is around 130 characters.

I had to go back and shorten all of mine. Trust G to create more work for us...lol.

Great training, Robert. Thanks. ~Jude

Thanks Jude. Figures Google would do that. But I still do see it from time to time, but it could be only for desktop. I will need to experiment with those same search results on my phone and see the differences.

According to an article in the Search Engine Journal, Google states that it does not have a set character count for snippets.

They must have realized after officially increasing the snippet count to 300 characters, with everyone rushing to increase their meta description length, the difference between mobile and desktop search results was causing too wide of a gap in what appeared in mobile search and regular search results.. ~Jude

Makes sense. Frankly I don’t know why they would nearly double it in the first place. That seems too much for mobile. I could see 160 to 200 but no more.
