On my first trip to Hawaii, the Big Island, visiting my friends who live there, I was able to visit Punalu'u Black Sand Beach. What an amazing experience it was, but odd at the same time. When I was first told about it I thought "how in the world could a beach have BLACK sand"? Once we got there I realized what they were talking about. How awesome is nature and creation!

Punalu'u Black Sand Beach located south of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Because of constant volcanic activity, you'll find white sands and black sands (the Big Island). It is one of the most famous black sand beachesin Hawaii.

Located between the towns of Pahala and Naalehu in Kau, Punaluu Black Sand Beach's jet black shores are an unforgettable sight. Coconut palms fringe the upper edge of sand and you may also discover large honu, (Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles), basking on the beach. Although it maybe tempting, do not touch these protected turtles and do not remove any black sand from the beach.

Although swimming isn't ideal, though people were, there is a picnic area and restroom facilities so you can have lunch while you experience the unique feeling of black sand between your toes.

And another pic with me:

While you are visiting Punalu'u Black Sand Beach, be sure to check out the Punalu'u Bake Shop located at Latitude 19 degrees, Four Minutes north of the equator -The Punalu’u Bake Shop and Visitor Center is the southernmost bakery in the U.S.A.

You will not be disappointed. Great food, entertainment, visitors center, large grounds to stroll through, and much more. www.bakeshophawaii.com

I hope you enjoyed the visit. Next time we will visit Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park.

Have a blessed remainder of the weekend!

Beautiful and a return trip is on my bucket list. Thanks for sharing. Jay

Hi, Tammy, yes, I have visited the black sand beach on Hawaii also visited as close as possible the Kilauea Volcano many years ago. Also, I remember the strong smell of the volcanic gases and the many lava trees.
Thanks for the pictures and the reminder :)

Hi Carol, thanks for visiting my blog. I love it there but yes the sulfur is strong, most days the vog is really thick now. My last visit there I actually went to the Volcanoes National Park. It was beautiful and very windy. Amazing what Mother Nature creates from her fires down below!!

Looking out the kitchen window at my friends' home you can see Mauna Kea. Breathtaking!

Glad you enjoyed!

Looks beautiful and I 'm sure you had a great time.
Nature is a real creator.

I've seen it in Hawaii. Obsidian and basalt rock!

Don't forget to take me on your next visit!!
