Gluten Free?
Has anyone had to go gluten free? I am curious to hear of experiences with this.
My 10 year old has a lot of food allergies and gastrointestinal problems. I was thinking this might help him.

I have not gone gluten free myself, but my friend has and she says she has regained her health by making it a way of life.
All the best to you as you re-organize your son's diet!
It isn't easy, but I think once you learn how to find all the gluten free products in the grocery stores, you can make it happen.

Gluten free diets usually are recommended for specific illness such as Celiac. I would recommend a whole foods diet instead. That means no processed foods whatsoever. Nothing that comes in a can or a box, etc. because it is often all the preservatives in foods that are causing intestinal issues. That would also involve using whole wheat, unbleached flours, etc. Fresh fruits and vegetables are best, frozen can also be used if not available.
There is also an elimination diet which can tell you if there is an issue with specific food items.
I completely agree with you and am trying to stay with fresh organic diet. We have a lot of kids and they are not happy without their pizza rolls and chicken nuggets, lol. It is a process.
Also, Cole has problems with a lot of fruits and eggs, and he doesn't really like much meat. I am just trying to find things to feed the poor kid.
He likes broccoli and Brussel sprouts, and salad but not every day. lol
I find something he likes and the over do it until he is like, "I never want that again!"
I truly believe in the foods that were prepared and eaten in my grandparents day. People were healthy if they managed to keep to what was then the food groups in a balanced way.
Guten Free, Paleo, Vegetarian, Vegan and all of the rest of these, what I would call Fad, diets are useless if you simply eat the things that were so widely available a hundred years ago!
Good afternoon Melissa,
I have gone Gluten Free some years ago and now bake my own and delicious bread. I did not have to but just thought it would be a good idea. The more I read about it the happier I am as I now realize that all this man made food can cause leaking gut etc.
My better half who moved from the US to Spain last year Aug. has lost a lot of weight now that he eats in a different way. Back to Mother Nature is the best way to stay healthy.
Greetings from the south of Spain, Taetske
I started researching nutrition, and it's role in health, disease, and overall well-being. It shocked me to learn the truth about the meat and dairy industry. These foods are the CAUSE of most of our problems. However, once you find out for yourself and understand the research, it's not hard to figure out why these foods are so bad for you...
Me, my husband and my mum are all gluten free. I'm thinking it may be better for my son also, has he has the same sort of stomach problems. I certainly would never go back to it and it's not so hard to avoid now, with so many GF products available and more being developed all the time. In my opinion, lots of people have problems with gluten/wheat - not just those with coeliac disease. So, it may be worth a try and see how you go.
Hello Melissa,
I do not think that gluten free diet will help if there is no diagnosis for Coeliac disease. Yes, you can try it to prevent symptoms but as you wrote about lot of fruits allergy, visit your doctor to exam what foods, fruits etc exactly is needed to avoid and look for a replacement to stay full of macro and micronutrients. On other side, keep your family always well hydrated.
And would like to ask if it can´t be because of any bacteries from animals. My sister had a cat and she started to have gastro problems and after exam, her doctor told that is due to cat (don´t know how it´s called) so she had to vaccinate etc.but at final she decided to stay without cat. She has got a dog now and it is all fine.

Hey Melissa
I went gluten free for a couple of months.
The substitute Product for Bread, Noodles and other things are terrible.
I have used instead of gluten free now a product called Dinkel and this is actually better.
Try a TCM Doctor he will find the reason and the source and might help your son overcome this.
My Son had food allergies and is now able to eat everything.
Wow, TCM? sorry I am really not very adept on the medical community. It is probably something obvious and I'm going to feel stupid.
What kinds of foods did your son have trouble with and what turned out to be the problem and solution?
Thanks for your reply.
I don't think our problem is gluten.
Sorry for confusing you, being so long in Asia I forget that not everyone is using shortcuts. No don't feel stupid, it was my fault.
My Son had Food allergies to products with artificial flavour and colouring.
TCM is Traditional Chinese Medicine. The approach is different than normal medicine. Our normal medicine approaches the symptoms and cures it whereas the TCM looks for the root cause and what triggers it.
The solution was to take him off the food with artificial flavours what is nearly impossible here in Asia specially in School and when he goes to friends. Stay off and introduce them slowly back to him as shock therapy. He has been taking some natural medicine mixed specially for him, ( tasted and smelled like really bad) it took us nearly 4 years to get rid of it totally. But now he is free from this since 2 years. The medicine change which the products he started to be shocked with, the potato chip, for example, the medicine smelled like dead feed. The one for tomato sauce smelled like rotten eggs. My son shed many tears of being tired doing it, and it broke sometimes my heart but we went through and I am happy we actually did. The TCM we went here is called EU YAN SAN clinic.
Hey Melissa! I don't have any first hand experience with that. I do have a friend that went gluten free hoping to control her weight a bit better. She thought it would be healthier. She also has a few family members that have to be gluten free.
Her biggest take away from the experience so far is not to replace all of the gluten products you eat with gluten free ones. In other words, do without the bun for your burger or chicken. The gluten free product is not always a healthier option.
Best of luck to your 10 year old and you with the gluten free journey!
I don't know if we are going to do it yet, and I am learning about the risk to a balanced nutritional diet. I know we would have to make sure we are still eating healthy..
He has reactions to a lot of fruits, that would not be a problem with gluten.

Melissa,
I have not been on a gluten free diet, but due to my Type 2 diabetes, I have cut out almost a hundred percent of wheat flour, potato, sweet potatoe, sugar and rice. Now I am able to control my blood sugar without medication, just a couple of herbal products, and exercise. For a while (months) I missed the bread and potatoes, but then I discovered almond powder. I make crepes with that, and use them to make sandwiches. My sense of taste has gotten a lot better, and, since they amputated my lower right leg about 8 months ago, I have lost 45 pounds. I went from a 40" waist to 32"!

PS
If your son is having to get up in the night a couple of times to urinate, better have his doctor do a complete blood workup. Diabetes is not much of a problem if you catch it in the early stages, at least not as much of a problem as it is if you don't.
Wow, thank you. Cole never gets up in the night. He gets sick to his stomach after eating some things and gets sick right before bed sometimes
