Spill Your Guts, Friend!

As the machinations of the Internet are slowly being revealed to me, I’m learning that in order to progress your rankings you must first be a trusted species. As if it’s not hard enough to become a specialist in your chosen field, you must also be trusted enough that people are going to read your content. This has been a concept that’s taken me a long time to absorb.

I’m a fifty one year old fellow and while this internet thing is not completely foreign to me, some things just do not come naturally – and yet – when you think about it, it’s as old as time. Back in the cave days I’m guessing we didn’t just trust anyone - because they may kill us or eat us. If we looked at someone to help us, we first needed to build trust before we did anything else. This was real life (or death) so we (either individually or collectively) needed to put in that extra effort to make sure that new person or tribe didn’t have thoughts of limiting our hunting and gathering.

I’m also guessing this probably took a while before any exchanges or collaborations took place.

So in this context I’m beginning to understand how important it is to build that trust before you even think about exchanging, or selling stuff. In fact there is another step before any thought of this – being helpful. Once I have gained your (the reader’s) trust, I then have to help provide a solution to whatever problem you have. This all takes some time.

IF You Trust Me and

IF I can Help You,

then we are in a position to exchange goods and services with each other.

But First – I need to ‘spill my guts’

I need to get used to being in the centre of a room with many eyes watching my every emotion and reveal who I am, what I stand for, and how I can possibly help all that are peering into my soul. Is that too revealing? Again, as a bloke in his fifties, I’ve become very good at developing one-on-one, face to face relationships – not with everybody mind you – just with people I like – with the assumption they like me.

But if we are going to make a success of business on the internet, we need to first focus on building that trust. That doesn’t mean telling me your life story – if my tribe came across your tribe 10,000 years ago, we don’t want to know how you grew up, rather what are you doing here, how did you get here (in the immediate sense), and what are you intentions?

So start ‘spilling your guts’ my friends and you will be on your way. Even writing this I have found I began writing for myself – and am finishing with thoughts of helping – so I guess I’m on my way :)

Feel free to comment below or connect - I’m new to this too,

Tim.

By Jove I think he's got it, lol! I always think it is kind of ironic that everybody seems to think they have found the new way, when you are so right in saying, it is the same old way just dressed up a little differently! Truth is truth! I really enjoyed your presentation! :)

Nice text Timothy, I can sign each and every word you say here (except that I came to this world a bit earlier). Many people appear to dream about thriving businesses in a couple of months, reality might be quite different.

I like this, at times I wonder if i'm doing things the right way and I love your point of view, would appreciate if you could check out my site with that same standard and let me know what I could improve on, thanks lot:

Aloha Sophia!
I checked out your site and it looks great but ideally I would like to postpone a proper analysis as I'm new to WA and wouldn't want to do you an injustice by commenting on areas I'm only just learning about.

However, from the perspective of my blog you have indeed built trust with your 'About Us' description of why & how you have come to be there with your husband. I wish him well with his back & I wish you well with your site.

One thing I did notice is that I found it hard to click into any products. One link led me to a 404 Error while the other led me straight to a product splash page. More knowledgeable WA people may say differently, but I was of the opinion you were selling me too fast. I would be interested in what others may be able to say on this.

Aloha,
Tim.
PS I love Hawaii - last time I was there in 2011 I paddled from Molokai to Oahu.

thanks very much for the feedback i have made these changes other than the selling too fast i have to write more content and make more "inbound links" to my pages well at least that's my mission for now thanks for the help with your advice I greatly appreciate it.

That's amazing hope you enjoyed the paddle from island to island
