Tim,
If it really is just a test then you could pick anything you want. If you want to sell products then I recommend you balance something you are interested in with a topic that is in demand. If you start with some ideas you are interested in then use Jaaxy here on WA to do keyword research and see if there is much demand in that area.
For example: If you want to have a site about a certain hobby or sport or activity, think about what you would write about. Would it be a product that you use and like, a type of sporting equipment etc? Then look up keywords (basically what you would use as your post titles). Those could be the name of the specific product you would review or more of a "How To..." post where you discuss the topic and then recommend products to accomplish it. You can also try phrases like "What is the best..." or "Best...." to get an idea of the demand for those ideas. You want to find keywords with high demand and low competition. Competition is shown as QSR which means Quoted Search Results. That is how many other websites are using that same phrase.
It may take awhile for you to find some great keywords in the niche you are considering. Don't give up right away if the results aren't great.
If there is less than 10 searches and 0 QSR you can also start there since there aren't many people looking for that yet but you won't have any competition either. It is easier to rank (get your post to rank high in the search engine results) with low or no competition.
If you just want to start and play around you can use one of the free SiteRubix sites provided here. Since it is free anyway it doesn't hurt to just try something and see how it goes.
