A Word That Deserves To Be Banned From The Business World, Can't Guess What It Is?

Yesterday started like any other day.

I woke up at 4.30 in the morning, intending to have an early start, as always. Then I discovered that I had no network connection. From that moment, everything ground to a halt.

I couldn't do a stick of work. It was frustrating.

NO NETWORK CONNECTION MEANT NO WORK DONE

Each time I tried to do something different from the original plan, I discovered that I couldn't do that too as that task also depended on network connection.

It's like finding yourself without electricity when you're about to cook your porridge on your stove. You shrug it off as nothing to worry about.

"Well, I'll just make myself a smoothie for breakfast," you tell yourself. Seconds later, you remember that you need electricity for that as well. How discouraging.

But the real frustration comes much later.

The day has ended. Productivity is zero. Then you realize that you could have done something to deal with the challenge and you didn't.

I had convinced myself that I couldn't find the solution as I didn't know what had caused the problem in the first place. I would call an expert, I decided. He would know what to do. Meanwhile, my whole day was wasted.

Late in the evening, my granddaughter came in to ask how my day went. I told her how terrible it had been as I had not been able to do any work because of network challenges.

She started to examine the electricity plug and connection on the wall.

"The WiFi is on," I told her. "It's just not working."

"I can see it's on," she said. "I want to see what will happen if I switch it off and then on."

I was expecting an expert to come in the following day to have a look and tell me what was wrong. So, I almost told her to leave well alone when I thought the better of it. She switched the plug off and on and, as if by magic, I was connected immediately.

Suddenly my brain also switched on. Now why didn't I think of that before?

THE IMPACT OF THOUGHTS AND WORDS

The only reason that comes to mind is that by thinking and saying "I can't", I shut my brain down and thinking clearly was no longer possible. The word "can't" had paralyzed my thinking processes. The impact of what we think and what we say is amazing.

That is what happens in business as well. There are thoughts and words to be avoided if you want to be successful in business.

You're busy with a project when you come across an obstacle or unexpected challenge. Do you immediately throw your hands up in despair while thinking there is no way out?

Or do you pause, take a deep breath and resolve to find a solution? Both your thoughts and your speech will play a role in whether you'll be able to find a solution.

Years ago I learned about the power of words and the power of thoughts, as well as the importance of choosing your words wisely. At the time, I made a list of negative words, including the word "can't", and made a decision to delete them from my mental files.

I was convinced that I had done that successfully, until yesterday.
So I did something about it. I immediately retrieved that list from my desk drawer, It is now sitting on the top of my desk where I can see it daily and consciously put it into practice.

What about you?

Do you have a bad habit that refuses to go?

What do you do when a habit that you thought was gone for good raises its ugly head again?

Nice post Thokozile. Don't you just feel like a dull penny when your kids do that. It's like come on old man let me show you how it is done.....lol

Hi Hugh. Thank you for stopping by and for your comments.

After a while, one gets used to it. We have to accept that our children and grandchildren will often know a lot more than we do when it comes to technology.

Our world is changing fast. My grandchildren were born into a world of TVs and computers. I wasn't.

Hi, I can definitely been paralysed by things that were 'impossible' before.

I too have had to reshape my thinking. What I have found interesting is that when my back is against the wall and I find that all the roads are closed that is when I tend to find new ways to do things.

After acknowledging this I have begun to reexamine the obstacles in my path and think of ways to get around it.

Increasingly enough I find that there always seem to be a way out if we are willing to take it.

Hi Candy. Thank you for your comments.
I appreciate your stopping by.

You are so right. Sometimes it's when your back is against the wall that you are forced to find a way out, and you usually do.

For me, it has been smoking; I will stop then start a few weeks or months later. The hardest habit I have had to deal with. So far, no cigarettes this year. trying to keep it simple by not thinking about it.

I tried all the programs you can think of; it boils down to me to decide if I want to live longer. Habits are not easily broken; a lot of discipline on our parts, and sometimes we never break them. Sad but reality.
