Procrastination, Are You Guilty Of It?

What a great word. "P R O C R A S T I N A T I O N " is!

What Does Procrastination Mean And Are You Guilty Of It?

Procrastination, for those of you who don't know, means:

"Being slow or late about doing something that should be done."

Isn't That The Same As Being Lazy?

There are differences between Procrastinating and being Lazy and they are:

"Procrastinating": Delaying unnecessarily

"Being Lazy": Voluntarily unwilling to exert the necessary effort required.

Are You Guilty Of Procrastination?

Be honest, are you guilty of procrastination or maybe you are lazy?!

I hereby admit to all the readers of this post "I Procrastinate".

There, I said it and I need to do something about it! I know I am not lazy but need to stop putting things off for another day.

How Do I Procrastinate Less?

That's a good question, isn't it?

I think what is needed first is to find out why we procrastinate and we can go from there!

Why Do I Procrastinate?

The following are some proven reasons for Procrastination:

  • Mood
  • Energy Levels
  • Task enjoyment

How Do I Address The Reasons For Procrastination?

There are a few things you can do to get around Procrastination and some are so simple.

Here we go with a few ideas:

  • Get things done when you feel energized. Maybe first thing in the morning after a good night's sleep?
  • Exercise regularly. Even a 15-minute walk before you start a piece of work will do you the world of good.
  • Don't take on too much work and expect it to be done! This is where Analysis Paralysis starts to come into effect and that does not help with Procrastination. Analysis Paralysis means that you have so much work you don't know where to start and therefore don't!
  • Delegate work if you can. This is a no-brainer. If you have a team or partner, use them if you can.
  • Allow time for your piece of work and break each part down into chunks if you can and focus on one chunk at a time and take breaks!
  • Perfectionism. Ok, I admit this is my failing too "I am a perfectionist". I have to make sure everything is perfect and this stops things from happening. I need to get things done and tweak them later if required. Going back to things is not a bad thing to do. Obviously, you need to make sure the work is done factually and is correct but the flowering up can always be done later on.
  • Skills. This is known to stop people in their tracks. "I don't have the skills so I'll sort it tomorrow". Tomorrow then becomes next week, next month etc. We live in a world of technology so embrace it. There are so many places to outsource work to. Fiverr or Upwork to name a couple. You may even have a friend or partner that can help which takes us back to the "Delegate work if you can".

Love this, just stumbled across your blog and it was just what I needed to hear! I started on here a few months ago full of enthusiasm and positivity! I then broke my wrist, got caught up in all the busyness of Christmas and winter's usual illnesses, full-time work etc, etc, etc. Today I signed back in somewhat less enthusiastic than I had been and yours was the first blog I read - meant to be! Thank you for encouraging me back on track.

Lisa

I’m guilty πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈπŸ˜’

Thank you for the post…I’ll have to try some of your recommendations for sure.

No worries. I plan more exercise!! haha

😝

I'm Guilty as charged, Glynn! I have several tasks going on simultaneously. I do a little in each, then move to the next, and then the next. This allows me to eventually get them all done, but sometimes staying on just one task is troublesome for me!

Some excellent tips here to get me back on track, my friend!

Thanks for this helpful post!

Jeff

Thank you for your comments Jeff. Yes I think the majority are all guilty of it. We have to acknowledge our failings for the better.

Thank you,

Glynn

We certainly do, Glynn! Thanks for the reminder!

Jeff

I was just listening to someone talking about this.
But to answer the question first, yes I am a procrastinator.
One of my problems is that I have so much to do, I find myself putting off some things. And often it is the wrong thing I put off. I try to get rid of the small stuff and have time to concentrate on the big stuff.
But the small stuff keeps on coming and I keep making small steps forward.
Now Inam concentrating on the big stuff. If I get 1 big thing done every week I am moving forward faster than before.
Will I still procrastinate, yep…but only with the small stuff.
Now I will tackle the big tasks and if I have time left..then some of the small stuff.
Stephen

I think we will all keep procrastinating in some way. I am going to try and lessen how much procrastinating I currently do though!

Tanks for the comments

Great post, Glynn! All great points. πŸ‘

Yes, I am a "procrastinator" and a "perfectionist," but I have been called much worse! 😊

I always take on much more than I have time for in a day, so - inevitably I know some things will have to get put off. It's usually a matter of "task triage," when it comes right down to it.

I also enjoy a certain amount of "fluidity" in my day, so I don't usually make it a point to look at the clock and see what I should be doing at that particular time.

Therefore, I try not to schedule my day in that fashion, and now that I'm "semi-retired," things are getting even more unpredictable, but I have to say I'm enjoying it quite a bit.

You never really know when an unforeseen opportunity for doing something fun will arise, and how many of those can you pass up without making yourself miserable?

Incredibly, I seem to still get more done in a day than many people I know. ?? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ ??

Disclaimer: "Don't Try This At Home," Folks! It took me years to perfect it and you may not like the outcome. 😊

Frank

You and I are of a like mind, Frank! I have many tasks in process and I jump back and forth between them to keep my motivation going, my friend!

Jeff

Haha, I think we have all be called other things in the past, many unmentionable!! :-)

Thank you for your comments! :-)

Much appreciated!

Glynn

Great minds think alike, Jeff! πŸ‘πŸ˜Š

Lol 😊

Yes, indeed, Frank! It's how I've rolled for some time. You just put a better face on it! πŸ€ πŸ‘
