Wrapping Up My Entire Life In a Rucksack (Part 2) Six Months on
Well, here I am in Mexico six months into becoming a digital nomad again.
What I have been doing for the last six months
1. Learning the language
2. Earned enough money to purchase a permanent residency, and it was confirmed this week I can have one, but I won't get it for at least five months
3. Lost 110lbs or 50 kilos. In effect, lost about 46 percent of my body weight. For those of you that wonder how I did that I eat a lot of raw food. It's not rocket science, I ate less carbohydrates apart from fruit and exercised more. I will eventually get my weight down to half of what it was, but the weight loss is slower now - and I look slim.
4.Writing a lot less than normal, some days nothing, this is my first blog here for six months, but my input has improved the last few weeks.
What I have learned
1. How very different Mexican Spanish is from Castillian Spanish, especially in Mayan areas.
2. It's tougher traveling on your own, but only when you are actually traveling. There is no one I can leave my rucksack with when I want the toilet, or a drink. It's tougher on your body traveling at nearly 70 than it was at nearly 50. It means I don't travel everyday. I stay at least three nights, and more often seven, it gives me recovery time
3. Other than the actual mechanics of traveling, it's no harder traveling alone, in fact it's often easier because there is no compromise. That doesn't mean I don't wish my husband was still alive and with me, although I am enough of a realist to know he would hate Mexico.
4. It's not lonely traveling alone, I am in Chiapas in the mountains in the middle of nowhere. The only person I speak to live is Rosa the owner of the local fruit shop. I do have Zoom sessions virtually everyday, and it has been my coaching that has paid the bills.
5. I have learned that on paper this is the last place I should be. San Cristobal is 8000 feet up and far too cold for me. It has never been warm enough to take my sweater off even though it is Summer. However, I appreciate the natural beauty of the area and I am very content. I am leaving at the end of August, because then it will really get cold. A good day the temperature climbs to 22 degrees. Having said that, the three months I have spent here have been idyllic, and in many ways I am sad I can't make my home here, as it is just too cold.
Future Plans
I am going to spend the winter on the Pacific coast. I haven't decided where yet,but possibly Puerto Escondido. If anyone has any suggestions, please comment below

Hi Catherine,
I hope you enjoy(ed) Mexico. We love it here. We recently moved from a beach area to an area with a great climate. In fact, according to National Geographic, it is the 2nd best climate in the world! We are in Ajijic, Jalisco state.
Happy travels!
Mary Ann
I truly hope you find your idyllic home, Catherine.
It has been roasting here in Tenerife, we had a heatwave as well and it has been in the high 40s and set to continue through to the middle of next week.
I will visit you one day when you settle down.
I'm keeping going with my site and my YouTube channel is also growing.
Thank you for the encouragement and for keeping me going, my friend.
I truly appreciate you.
Lisa :-)
I genuinely want you to succeed , you have shown such grit and authenticity, in laying yourself bare to criticism. You just plough on and move forward. You are an inspiration to everyone. PS. It would be lovely to meet
Good morning Catherine,
It's good to hear from you, I'm glad that you're getting on well.
I must admit it's very bold of you to do what you're doing, especially on your own! I admire you for stepping out of the boat and doing what you want to do; good for you!
There are some absolutely amazing places in the world to visit. Maybe you need to write a book on all your adventures!?
Wishing you all the best.
Roy
I can do one of two things Roy - write about traveling or travel. For some reasons I cant do both. I even bought the travel domain and I think there is one article on it. Hopefully when I get my paperwork in order I will be more settled
Good morning Catherine,
It's good to hear from you, I appreciate your reply.
I understand where you're coming from, hopefully, when you become more settled, you will be able to do both!
I think a travel blog would be great. I have seen a few people who have documented their travelling stories. It appears that they have a huge amount of followers. I appreciate this takes work like any other website, but I guess it's definitely worth thinking about.
I guess for many people documenting their travel stories would cover the costs of travelling.
Have a great time and I look forward to hearing part three!
Roy
Ill get bsck to you re places to stay on pacific coast side. A friend of mine spent 6 months a few hours SW of the Arizona/Mexico border. I dont recall the name of the little town.
Yes, Castilian Spanish is unique. Its the only language that uses a 'th' sound.
Rumor is that due to a speech impediment of the then ruler somewhere in Spain, the town began to speak Spanish in the same way, with a lisp.
Rudy
That is apparently true Rudy regarding the list one of the Philips I believe although I can't for the life of me remember which one

Hello World Traveler, Catherine. Thank you for a wonderful post. When I say wanderlust, which I say a lot, this is what I mean. Congratulations on pulling it together and doing it, especially by yourself. Yes, to memories. Congratulations, also, on the weight loss. That took tremendous resolve. I admire you in all this.
Thank you so much Deelilah
