What are Backlinks? (Simplified)
Backlinks
Backlinks are like a virtual thumbs-up from one website to another. Picture the internet as a huge web made up of many different pages, like a giant book with countless chapters. Each page has its own content. When one page mentions or links to another page, that's a backlink. It's like saying, "Hey, this page has something useful or interesting to say."
Why Do They Matter?
Why do backlinks matter? Think of them as votes of confidence. The more votes a page gets, the more important it looks. Search engines like Google notice these votes. If they see a page with lots of backlinks, they think, "This must be a good page," and may show it higher up in search results.
Not All Are Created Equal
But not all backlinks are equal. Some are more valuable than others. Links from well-known, trusted websites are like gold stars. They carry more weight than links from less-known sites. It's a bit like getting a recommendation from an expert versus a stranger.
Now, you might wonder, how do websites get backlinks? They can create great content that people want to share. Or they can reach out to other sites and ask for a link. Sometimes, websites earn backlinks by being unique or by offering something that others find valuable.
Colorful Spiral of an Imaginary Backlink
So, next time you browse the web, notice how pages link to each other. Those links, or backlinks, help you discover new information and guide you to what might be useful or interesting. They're the connective tissue of the internet world, and this is AMAZING!

I see you took the opportunity and used my question as a source of inspiration. Even if you didn't, I commend you and seeing the opportunity of providing what something wants "explanation of a backlink", you will at least have 1 person who you will add value to which was the person asking and with that other people are probably asking the same question and this will provide an answer to. 🙏 Robert
An opportunity can occur at any point of the day. Inspiration can just walk up and slap you without notice.
As for your case, Even in a PPC campaign, when they click on your links, you get exposure which can lead to backlinks if they find the information provided useful, helpful or interesting.
