The Trek Back and Near Tragedy
November 12, 2025: The Trek Back and Near Tragedy
Distance: 35 yards. Time: Eternal.
The return trip began with false confidence. I had made it to the mailbox once, so how hard could it possibly be to go back? The wind answered that question before I finished thinking it. Hard. Very hard.
Snow had already buried my footprints, erasing proof that I ever existed. I was a man alone in the tundra, clutching an empty mailbox door like a relic of simpler times. My beard had frozen into a small ice sculpture of regret.
The house looked miles away, though I could still see my dogβs judgmental face in the window. He was probably planning my funeral or, worse, my replacement.
Halfway back, I dropped my glove. A rookie mistake. I considered leaving it behind like a sacrifice to the winter gods, but survival instincts kicked in. I retrieved it, nearly lost my balance, and saw my life flash before my eyes: coffee, bacon, gummies, and bad decisions.
By the time I reached the porch, I was limping, mumbling, and questioning every choice that led me there. The doorknob felt like heaven. I stumbled inside, victorious and frostbitten.
Tomorrowβs forecast?
Snow Clearing, but cold.
Still rude.

Congratulations for finding a way to share information about bad weather!
Building tolerance for cold weather may take a bit of time. It surely would for me.
Fun read, and thanks for sharing.

Good job you have a dog and not a cat. The cat would have locked the door and sat laughing at you from the window π

35 yards? You should sign up for Wim Hof's Cold training. I remember once attempting to get home from work one night in a blizzard when my car got buried in a snowdrift on the road and I had to run about half a mile to the house. I made it. It was bitter cold. I was lucky. That same night elsewhere in Wisconsin 2 people died out in the cold weather.
Maybe Texas is calling you back, Michael.
Mel
Perhaps. I do miss Whataburger, breakfast tacos, and kolaches.
Whataburger is good. We have them in Albuquerque too.MAC.
