If you are online long enough, you will run into this common problem. A website won't load. A page looks like it's stuck in the mud and has been since 2019. You try to refresh and refresh and nothing changes. Before you throw your laptop out the window, try this one thing: clear your cache and cookies.
It fixes more problems than you'd think. And no, you don't need to be a tech wizard to do it. Remember my motto: If I can than anyone can.
What Are Cache and Cookies? (The Short Version)
Your browser is basically a hoarder. Yes, I said hoarder, just like the lady on the learning channel show that has saved every piece of garbage she has ever created.
It saves little files everywhere so it can load pages faster next time you visit. Cache stores images and page elements. Cookies store login info and preferences so you don't have to sign in every single time.
Here's the problem. When a website updates, those old saved files can fight with the new version. That's when things break. Clearing them out gives your browser a fresh start.
Think of it like cleaning out your fridge. Sometimes you just gotta toss the old stuff like the mayonnaise that expired last year. While your at it, get rid of the sour cream. That stuff is not fit for human consumption!!!
The Lazy Way (Keyboard Shortcut)
Before we walk through each browser, here's a shortcut that works in Chrome, Firefox, and Edge:
- Windows/Linux: Press Ctrl + Shift + Delete
- Mac: Press Command + Shift + Delete
That drops you right onto the clearing screen. Check the boxes, pick your time range, confirm. Done. You can skip the rest of this guide if that's all you needed.
For everyone else, here's the step-by-step for each browser.
Google Chrome
- Open Chrome and click the three vertical dots in the top-right corner
- Select Delete browsing data
- Choose a time range (pick All time if you want a full clean slate)
- Check the boxes for Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files
- Click Delete data
- Close and restart Chrome

Shortcut: Ctrl + Shift + Delete. Same as the others. Microsoft didn't get creative here.
Safari (Mac)
Safari likes to be different. You have to clear cookies and cache separately. Of course it does.
Clearing Cookies
- Open Safari
- In the top menu bar, click Safari, then Settings (or Preferences on older macOS)
- Click the Privacy tab
- Click Manage Website Data
- Click Remove All to clear everything, or pick specific sites and click Remove
- Confirm by clicking Remove Now
- Click Done
Clearing the Cache
- Open Safari and go to Safari > Settings (or Preferences)
- Click the Advanced tab
- Check the box for Show Develop menu in menu bar
- Close Settings
- In the top menu bar, click Develop, then Empty Caches
- Or just press Option + Command + E if you're feeling fancy
On iPhone/iPad (Safari):
- Open the Settings app (not Safari, the actual Settings app)
- Scroll down and tap Safari
- Tap Clear History and Website Data
- Confirm by tapping Clear History and Data
After You Clear: What to Expect
- You'll be signed out of most websites. Just log back in. It's not the end of the world.
- Some pages may load slower the first time you visit. That's normal. Your browser is rebuilding its cache from scratch.
- If you had preferences saved (like dark mode or language settings), you might need to set those again. Minor inconvenience, big payoff.
When Should You Clear Cache and Cookies?
- A website won't load correctly or looks broken
- You're seeing old content that you know has been updated
- A page is stuck or frozen
- You're getting weird error messages on a site that was fine yesterday
- You just want a clean slate for privacy reasons
Clearing your cache and cookies is safe, easy, and solves a surprising number of problems. It's the first thing to try before you assume a website is broken. Nine times out of ten, this fixes it.
