I am the NICHE Detective!
I love a good mystery. The puzzle, the research, the possible suspects. Unfortunately spending time laboring over your niche isn't all that great.
Thoughts of the horrors that might await the person who picks the wrong niche and WOE to the poor patsy that believes they have the perfect one only to have a fail! I mean failure isn't an option right??? Or is it!?
So I started a new blog site that I intend on filling in as I can to help others conquest their niche fears. I did A LOT of work this week trying to unravel the mystery of the niche so that I can make it easier for others as well. So here is goes- well in part anyway.
So just like ole Sherlock I started out with just the facts. What is a Niche? Why is it important and why can't I just go after a more general population of people and hope to net more prospects right?
Fact number one- A is defined as an adjective as: denoting or relating to products, services, or interests that appeal to a small, specialized section of the population
Note the word specialized. This means or implies that your must specific section and not a broad or general section or it cannot be a niche. So all persons that like to wear many hats please choose just one or your will not find your niche.
Why is having a niche so darned important. As I learned this week, your need to think of a niche as the difference between a general practice doctor and a specialist like a surgeon.
The general practitioner usually has a smaller office, takes a wide array of payments sources, gets paid less for working more hours and are amongst most stressed in the field. While the specialist can command greater pay (and get it) works specific hours and days and enjoys large expensive offices, more vacation time and has a myriad of specialized help around them. Having a specialty gives your more clout because over time and with practice and study, your will get very good at that one thing. Once your have that clout, your will be able to be the surgeon in your field rather than the GP.
After getting a good idea of why a niche was important, I set out to see what made the successful niches more successful than others. What I found out was pretty interesting.
How many of your picked a niche YOU were interested in? I am not asking what your have talent in (though your don't have to have talent a niche your choose- just a willingness to learn). The bottom line is that the niches that are most successful are NOT ABOUT YOU.
A great niche looks more like this:
Person (where they are now)---------------void----------------Person (where they want to be)
You are the one that has to help them figure out how to build a bridge to go over that Void and get to where they need to be.
It's really this simple: Find out what people want, understand the problem and solution better than they do and then sell them the solution with ease.
So how do your find out what people want? This is where your get creative. Watch what comes up on Facebook. What do people tell each other-" I wish I had or if there were only"
Listen to people at the store as your wait in line. Chat with your computer tech and ask him what drives him crazy about his vocation. Talk to the HVAC guy that comes to fix your air-conditioning or your child s teachers, dance instructors or even your yoga instructor.
I know we all get tired of hearing people complain BUT that's your GOLDMINE folks!!!
What pressures and worries keep people up all night? What are the most popular blog posts and what comments do people leave?
So much to think about now huh?
Bottom line- a great niche isn't about your, it's about what the market needs. Find a problem, use a skill your have or learn the skill to fix the problem and your have a niche that sells itself.
I can't tell your what your should pick. But I can tell your if your do a little footwork like I did this week, your will have one if not many great niches screaming for your. There is a whole really cool process to help your find your niche and a whole lot of opinions about how it should be done out there. But the bottom line ole Sherlock here found is find a problem people need solved. It could be local to your or over the internet. Then either use the skills your have to make great solutions to the problem or learn those skills. Learn what the market needs in that niche inside and out. Do it so well that your can tell your client " I know just what will fix that" then post your affiliate links to help the solution, sell them a product your sell or offer the services your know your can help them with.
Like I said, this is the TIP of the iceberg version but I hope it helps. I
I posted this because for the last few weeks, I noted that there were an awful lot of niche questions. Unfortunately for too many of us, we were looking at it a bit like "what do I want to be when I grow up" rather than how can I solve one predominant problem in an industry I know or can learn. Because I did this very same thing, I decided I would do some sleuthing and see what might help make the niche selection process a bit more reachable. It still requires work and No your aren't stuck to one once your pick it but your do need to see it through. Often times it's the failure(s) in a niche that brings about better clarity about the right niche later.
I will be writing more later as I expand my knowledge in this but I hope it helps.
Have a great and safe holiday!
